Colour is manifestation of lights and energy, it transforms the world, and through our perceptions of it, can transform our lives. Using colour in our interior decoration allows us to play with, and manipulate, the forces of light and dark and we need both for our body clocks which are attuned to their rhythms, our hormones constantly adjusting to the amount of light available in the day and throughout the year.
Colour in our homes is an integral part of our lives because it affects our behaviour, thoughts and feelings. Colour is also associated with emotional properties, being green with envy, sad and blue, red with rage, even having a colourful personality. There is a clear relationship between our energy and that created by colour in an environment. Various colours have different implications and application hence using colours creatively can aid the Feng Shui of the space.
Red: Red is found sparingly in nature so follow that lead and use it sparingly in your home. It is an extraordinarily powerful colour which grabs attention. The colour red is known to increase your heart rate so a touch of it might inspire passion but too much moves us up the scale towards aggression. You will not feel relaxed if you use it in a dining room either, although the conversation will be stimulating.
Purple: Purple is an artistic colour associated with introspection and meditation, clarity, rituals, dignity and a sense of occasion. A dark shade of it would make a very quiet bedroom and it would add grandness to living rooms. It implies the Fire element and signifies fame, royalty and reputation.
Green: Green is the colour of nature and growth, and because it is at the centre of the colour spectrum it induces feelings of harmony and peace. It soothes the spirit, calms the nerves and reassures people. The colour signifies wealth, growth, blessings and abundance.
Orange: Orange is a vibrant colour linked to health and vitality. It has developed from the fire of red towards a more earthy tone. Also associated with enthusiasm and optimism, it is a good welcoming colour for hallways.
Yellow: Yellow represents the sun’s power to sustain life and as a stimulating colour it is associated with longevity, cheerfulness and the intellect. To stimulate and focus your mind, sit opposite something yellow when you are writing. This is the colour of earth energy signifying gathering, socializing hence a good colour for living, dining and social zones.
Pink: Pink is a calming shade of red and is good for a bedroom because it is very feminine and nurturing. Its healing qualities make it good for children and convalescents and supportive for divorcees. Pink has sedative qualities so it is good for places where you want serenity and for people who have difficulty sleeping.
Blue: Representative of the energy of water, blue is associated with introspection, tranquillity and serenity. It is known to reduce inflammation and induce sleep, so it is ideal in the bedroom, particularly with the addition of some warm peach or red accents to reduce its chilling effect.
