“The Food Cartel” who took over Cannon in September this year seems to have done quite a positive change, especially with the food. With the hope of making Cannon the “go to” place in Galle they have introduced a new gastronomic menu consisting of Premium Steaks, Grills, Pub Burgers and freshly served Seafood Platters.
Ambience
Comprising of booths and wooden tables the ambience inside the restaurant is very relaxing and pleasant. They were playing some chilled out music as well and it wasn’t too loud so we were able to have a decent conversation while still allowing the music to amplify the ambience. However I preferred the outside seating a lot more, simply because of the lovely view and the cool breeze. Sipping a nice cocktail and biting into a juicy Pub Burger while enjoying that breathtaking view is any traveller’s fantasy!
Drinks
They serve quite a range of cocktails and other alcoholic beverages as well as many other non alcoholic beverages like mocktails, coffee and milkshakes. We were served two refreshing cocktails namely “The General's Daughter” and “The Brigadier’s Call”.
I loved the latter which was a strawberry and mint based cocktail that wasn’t too strong and had a perfect blend of flavours. Although the drinks were really good the main attraction of the night was most definitely the food!
Food
The food was amazing! We were served Chicken Satay, Vegetable Samosas, Chicken Wings, Chicken Cordon Bleu, sticky rice and butter chicken curry and a mouthwatering Beef Burger
All the food items were oozing with flavour and each bite was a mouthwatering delight. The Chicken Satay was comprised of perfectly grilled, golden-brown chicken bites with just the right amount of charred, smoky goodness. The peanut and lime sauce that covered it simply amplified the flavour and overall it tasted simply fantastic.
The Fort Cannon Half Pounder was an amalgamation of everything you would expect from a great Beef Burger. The minced beef paired up with the barbecue sauce, provided the perfect combination for this mildly spicy yet wholly delectable Half Pounder.
“Lord of the wings” was certainly the correct way to term the amazing chicken wings that we were served. The wings were dipped in hot sauce, honey and a dab of chillie to increase the spice, yet it wasn’t too spicy either. The balance was truly admirable. It was juicy and succulent and is definitely something that everyone must try out should they ever come to the “Cannon”.
I also particularly liked the sticky rice and the Butter Chicken Curry. The curry was super creamy and the flavour blended in perfectly with the rice. The thinly cut chunks of chicken were simply delightful and just melted in our mouths as we bit into it. The rice itself had just the right texture and was good enough to stand alone.
All things considered, Cannon Bar and Grill is certainly a restaurant worth going to if you are ever in Galle, so make sure you try it out!
