We caught up with her for a chat.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Shy, exhibitionist, woman.
Tell me about ‘Countries of the Body’.
It was my first book! I feel as tender towards it as I do towards my left leg!
What was the inspiration behind it?
Dance dance dance.
What’s the most challenging thing about putting together poetry/writing poetry?
Getting people to read it.
What’s ‘Fountainville’ about? Your inspiration behind it?
It's a fable set in the present day. It's set in a surrogacy clinic. It reverses traditional gender roles. Inspirations are medieval Welsh myth, the TV show Deadwood and a trip I made to Nagaland.
3 things no one knows about you?
I can turn cartwheels, I dislike people who don't trim their nose hairs and I often prefer dogs to people.
Your expectations for GLF 2016?
To evangelize about poetry, to have wonderful conversations, and I hope, to dance.
Your expectations for Sri Lanka?
To be enchanted as always.
Future plans?
To work on my dislikes & maybe even a new book.
Tishani Doshi is one of the many writers who’ll be attending the Fairway Galle Literary Festival 2016 starting today!
