Electric Peacock is thrilled to announce its festival headliner Tinie Tempah, the world famous hip-hop and rap artist, who will take center stage as the top act on the Electric Peacock lineup on Saturday, the 27th of April 2013 in Colombo. “This is a huge first for Sri Lanka,” said Leah Bazalgette, Co-founder of the festival, “an artist of his caliber has never graced the country. He is the most current commercial music artist to perform here to date.”
Tinie Tempah has a number of credits to his name, being a multi award winning artist, gracing the main stage of Glastonbury festival, collaborating with music industry greats like Snoop Lion, Rihanna and Calvin Harris.
He made his breakthrough with his debut single ‘Pass Out’ into the commercial music scene; currently the video has 50 million views on YouTube. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number 1, having sold just over 92,000 copies in its first week. He was further thrust into the limelight after his famous collaboration with the house music demigods, Swedish House Mafia, being the lead vocals on their chart-topping track ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’.
“He is a true British legend! This was confirmed when he was asked to play the closing ceremony of the Olympics in London in the summer of 2012,” declared Tasha Marikkar, Co-founder of Electric Peacock. “It is an incredible fete at just 23 years of age to perform at an event that has approximately 770 million viewers watching it worldwide!”
The Electric Peacock team has kept their promise of promoting a multi-genre music offering amidst many events in Sri Lanka that have been solely focused on electronic dance music acts. Having a headline act from a hip-hop and rap genre will be a first in the country and very refreshing from the usual house music DJ scene. The festival has more artists from other genres yet to be announced.
The festival directors have developed new collaborations with strong sub-culture groups specifically skating and break-dancing to showcase at the festival as part of a unique installation. “We believe that hosting Sri Lankan break-dancers and skaters at the festival will get the crowds pumping and get into the vibe of the party, not to mention adding diversity to our show,” said Leah.
More so, the team is very keen to encourage their festival-goers to plan their outfits in advance and ensure they try to dress up according to the theme planned for their third year. “Our theme this year is based on a famous book called ‘Where the wild things are’. We hope that all the festival goers will come dressed up in animal print or animal costumes, or just be inspired to be wild!” explained Tasha. The festival pioneered the first free costume tent in 2011 and will be giving away more free costumes this year.
In another festival industry first, Electric Peacock is collaborating with the British Council on a special music project to launch The Selector programme in Sri Lanka. The Selector is an international showcase for the best new music the UK has to offer, a 2 hour weekly programme that covers all styles of music from indie, dubstep, folk, soul, electro and everything in between – much like Electric Peacock Festival’s multi-genre platform. As part of this exciting collaboration, the British Council will be featuring a fresh new artist from the UK as a main support artist at this year’s festival.
“The Electric Peacock strives to push boundaries every year. As curators of the festival, Leah and myself look to bring down hot, fresh talent to perform as well as create new and unique experiences within the festival grounds. This year look out for collaboration with Academy of Design and our incredible art installations,” beamed Tasha.
The Directors and the team behind Electric Peacock are overflowing with excitement over the confirmation of this epic headline artist and are encouraging people to get their tickets early in order not to miss out on what is set to be a truly mind blowing event. “Tickets are available on Anything.lk and there are some great early bird offers,” said Leah.
