'The Dictator' returns to Punchi Theatre
H.C.N. De Lanerolle's 'The Dictator' returns to the stage - this time with veteran dramatist Namel Weeramuni at the helm.
Namel Weeramuni - also owner of Punchi Theatre in Borella - is someone who needs no introduction. His illustrious repertoire in the world of theatre cannot be denied as he continues to dabble in a field close to his heart, now in the capacity of playwright and director. Permeating his entire being is the unwavering love for theatre. "I'm a lunatic" he states with a chuckle, before he heartily adds "A theatre lunatic." That much is clear as he fondly talks of his love for theatre and the trials and tribulations of his theatrical journey.
His contribution to local theatre has been immense, and he shows no sign of slowing down."I am young at heart, but not so much physically. I am an old man" he says nonchalantly before elaborating that it upsets him that people's interests in theatre seems to be dwindling, irrespective of the quality of the play's being spewed out. Nevertheless, he intends, despite his age, to continue to do all he can to keep theatre alive.
Speaking on his newest venture 'The Dictator' Namel explains that the time was right for the play, and that it does in fact contain contemporary themes would strike a chord with the audience and allow them to laugh at themselves. The Dictator is a satire that tells the story of Ralahamy who wants to defeat the Japanese and become the dictator of Ceylon - with the help of occult. "There's an element of reality and fantasy. It's a play within a play." Supported by a talented cast including veterans Wijerathne Warakagoda, Malini Weeramuni and Daya Tennakoon in lead roles, the play will no doubt have the audience in stitches.
