Creative Circle, the umbrella project of the Silent Hands theatre company is preparing in full swing for their production, Sherlock Holmes’ Secret Life, set to go on the boards on the 14th, 15th and 16th of this month.

The play was written by Ed Lange and for the Sri Lankan audience, a production of such nature is a premier. It is also a maiden for Creative Circle. The play is directed by Jehan Bastians, and casts in several seasoned actors and on a sidenote, it is the first time this set of cast members are coming together in the same production.

The play is a comedy thriller scripted by Ed Lange based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conon Doyle and is the first and previously unwritten case undertaken by Watson and Holmes. The play is set in the juncture when Holmes and Watson were not so established in their careers as detectives, and basically were at the onset of their trek. A much sought after character throughout the history of investigatory story telling, and a hyped-up subject as of late, due to the popularity of certain TV series and stars, the production by Creative Circle follows a story that is close to everyone’s hearts.

Revealing an extra dimension and adding volume to these characters by humanizing the characters created by Sir Arthur Conon Doyle, the production will give something remarkable to every Holmes fan. If you ask me, this doesn’t seem like anything those of you who are die-hard Sherlock Holmes buffs can afford to miss out on.

Silent Hands started off as group of theatre lovers working backstage providing their services to other directors who needed services such as stage management lighting and sound management. 2012 also saw the launch of two sub groups under Silent Hands Productions: Silent Hands Creative Circle and the Silent Hands Theatre School. This will be the introductory project for the Creative Circle, belonging to a different genre and tone the company is usually famed for.

Jehan shared how appealing the script was to materialize into a production, “When I first read the play, I just knew I had to do it!” In response to the possibility of the audience walking in with expectations that will satisfy their preconceived ideas of this popular character and series, Jehan said, “People will come with notions, but they will be surprised. It is a comic thriller and from starting off in a light fluffy tone, as it progresses it really keeps building up. The lovely thing is that there are different elements to the story.

There is a range of emotions, but there’s also a very solid story. And lots of in-depth understanding to the characters. When it comes to comedy there is a recipe to pull it off. But a plan like this is far more challenging. The production is bigger and I am very very excited about the play!”

The play casts in a stellar cast with pros inclusive of Shanaka Amarasinghe, Anuruddha Fernando, Neidra Williams, Viran Corea, Andre Perera, Kanishka Heart, Roshni Gunaratne, Avishka De Alwis and also Lauren W. Bastians. The play is co produced by Javin Thomas and Billam Poulier.
