With the school holidays in full swing, Sulochana Dissanayake - Founder and Artistic Director of contemporary puppeteering company Power of Play, together with her team, are all set to present two fun, interactive, creativity driven shows for children (and those who are children at heart)!
Telling Tales will take place at Cargills Bookcity, 3rd floor, Majestic City on Friday the 17th of April at 5.30pm; and Mahadenamuththa’s Avurudu Ulella will happen at the MILK Bookstore, 44A, Horton Place Colombo 7 from 10am to 11.30am on Saturday the 18th of April.
Telling Tales is a delightful mix of stories, music, puppets and play; celebrating the joy of creative experimentation in which participants can exercise their imaginations and discover the infinite number of stories that can be created using bodies, voices and a few simple props.
“Telling Tales is a new concept that we are introducing at Cargills from April,” enthuses Sulochana. “And we are very excited about it! It’s not just about story telling – it’s a truly immersive experience that allows the participants to enter into the tale, acting, singing and dancing along with us. A great outlet for children who love the creative arts and would enjoy a chance to perform, it’s also a fun experience for those who simply like to observe their peers in action”. Sulochana recommends that participants dress in comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Ideal for 4-8 year olds who appreciate a creative release; the program will be facilitated primarily in English with brief translations in Sinhalese.
On the 18th of April at MILK Bookstore, celebrate Avurudu with Mahadenamuththa and his modern golayas! Learn interesting facts about the origins of this celebration, play traditional Avurudu games and enjoy a morning of interaction, friendship and fun! Performance and games will be conducted in both English and Sinhala.
“We are so looking forward to Mahadenamuththa’s Avurudu Ulella! It’s a wonderful opportunity for children and adults alike to learn fascinating facts about the New Year and to enjoy not just a special performance from the wise man and his golayas, but also to play traditional games in an atmosphere that is completely friendly and non competitive with everyone getting an equal chance to participate, learn, have fun and let their imaginations run free.” explains Sulochana. “Participants are welcome to dress in traditional New Year attire to add to the festive nature of the event”.
