· Friday 15th – In Conversation - AMITAV GHOSH on his Ibis Trilogy: his bestselling Ibis trilogy comprises Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke and Flood of Fire. The story of the three novels is set in the first half of the 19th century and deals with the trade of opium between India and China run by the East India Company and the trafficking of coolies to Mauritius.
· Thursday 14th Jan – Thinking Out Loud - HUGH THOMSON on Nanda Devi : A Journey to the Last Sanctuary: In this fascinating audio-visual talk, Hugh Thomson talks about his journey to the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, on the border between India and Tibet, a place that had never been entered by human beings until 1934.
· Friday 15th – Thinking out Loud - SABA DOUGLAS-HAMILTON on The Secret Life of Elephants: Wildlife film maker, conservationist and television host, Saba Douglas-Hamilton, talks about her passion for elephants and growing up in the East African bush while her parents did their pioneering research on wild elephant social behaviour.
· Saturday 16th - In Conversation - SONALI DERANIYAGALA on Wave: In 2004, at a beach resort on the coast of Sri Lanka, Sonali Deraniyagala and her family—parents, husband, sons—were swept away by a tsunami. Only Sonali survived to tell their tale. This is her account of the nearly incomprehensible event and its aftermath.
