Close on the heels of refuting rumours about her shifting to the US and explaining that she goes there only to “socialise”, actor Mallika Sherawat on Saturday said that India is a “depressing” place to be. And that, she said in an interview to a foreign magazine at the 66th Cannes Film Festival, is why she divides her time between India and the US.

“I made a conscious decision to divide my time between Los Angeles and India. So when I enjoy the social freedom in America and go back to India, which is so regressive for women, it’s depressing,” said the 36-year-old, who stunned everyone with as many as 17 on-screen kisses in her debut film, Khwahish, a decade ago.

“India is a hypocritical society where women are really at the bottom as compared to men,” said the Haryana girl.

Interestingly, in another interview earlier this month, the actor had said that she’s a “very desi girl”, and wants to marry a “very desi man, because Indian men are intelligent and sensitive.” Sherawat is also hunting for an Indian beau through a reality TV show!

The actor, who is currently working on Dirty Politics, a film based on the Bhanwari Devi murder case, remembers her 2003 bikini debut fondly. “And instantly I became a fallen woman and a superstar at the same time.

Because there is a moral code — that this is what a leading lady can do on screen and this is what she can’t do. But I did everything I am not supposed to do,” added Sherawat, who had recently also said in an interview that she wants to change her sex symbol image.
