Jazzin’ - Rhythm of the Soul” will be Danceworld’s 7th concert. Sureka Buell, artistic director of Danceworld is reputed to staging shows of impeccable standards together with her school. The theme for this year’s show is unique; it has catapulted into featuring fifty of the most talented and committed students at the concert. It is all about dance being a communicative device between the dancer’s soul and the rest of the world.
The show will feature a mix of dance genres inspired by songs from the musicals and movies such as FAME, LION KING, RIO, STEP UP, MULAN, HONEY and COPA CABANA to name a few.
Dances are choreographed to more current numbers by popular artistes like Alicia Keys, Florence and the Machine, Christina Aguilera, Michael Jackson, Adele and Michael Buble.
With a smaller cast, a fresh theme and some hard core rehearsals, the dancers seem to be having the time of their lives. The show will also feature Assistant Choreographer, Deshana De Alwis who Sureka considers to be her star pupil and an epitome of dedication.
Regardless of size, height and appearance, Sureka feels her dancers deserve the spotlight as far as they are committed. The selection of music and choreography is the fruit of the entire school’s collective effort and ensure everyone is given centre-stage.
Some members of the cast shared with Life Online why they like this year’s concert and theme in particular.
Deshana De Alwis (20) Assistant Choreographer, senior student
“This year’s show is very different from what we have done before, especially because we are working with a smaller cast. It has been so much fun working with a group like this and all of them are so talented. Rehearsals have been intense but amazing at the same time. Every item is different and my favourite dance would have to be Shadowland."
Piyusha (16) - Senior student
"I am really excited for this year’s concert because it’s going to be of a very high standard, and the dances are really nice. The dance rehearsals are pretty tough but with all our hard work, enthusiasm and aunty Sureka’s strict discipline and amazing guidance we are sure the show will be a night to remember. I think the theme for this concert (Rhythm of the Soul) is very appropriate because each and every dancer has put their heart and soul into this fantastic production. My favourite item is Fame!! As just a few of us are taking part in this concert aunty has set very high standards in order to make this an amazing concert! "
Francesca – Senior student
"It’s my fourth show with the dance school and I can safely say that it is one of the best concerts this school has produced. We are celebrating the best dances from aunty Sureka’s previous shows and fusing it with some beautiful new ones. The title, 'Rhythm of the Soul’ is quite appropriate as this concert will showcase a little bit of our souls. The rehearsals have been tiring but are worth it as aunty pushes us to be the best we can. My favourite item is ‘Black and Gold’ and ‘Dog Days are Over’ because of the experimental and exquisite choreography."
Shehanthi (13) – Intermediate student
"I have been dancing ever since I was six and now it’s basically my whole life. I’ve been in every one of the concerts and had a blast at all of them. Aunty is quite patient with us youngsters. When the concert is drawing close we have extra rehearsals which we don’t mind because it’s so much fun to hang out with friends and practise our dances. And in our free time we love to invent new poses and moves. I’m in five dances this year and my favourite would be “Are You Ready.” Aunty Sureka makes sure all the dances are ‘our style.’ Aunty makes sure we can do our best on stage by selecting the best dances that suit the dancer’s style. I’m 13 now and I still catch myself dancing in front of a mirror."
