An insider’s foodie guide to the Galle Fort
A day away from Sri Lanka’s biggest literary event, the Fairway Galle Literary Festival 2016 is set to be the best ever. The legendary Galle Fort will play host to this five day event which will see thousands of literary lovers throng to the Galle Fort to see their favourite authors in action.
While books and authors may satiate the soul, food is also equally important. Where do you go to grab a bite or indulge in a nice meal? An old timer of the Galle Fort, Tuan Rajap shares inside information on some of the “must visit” places in the Galle Fort to satiate your appetite.
A Minute by Tuk Tuk at the Dutch Hospital is nice for milkshakes and mocktails. They also serve decent grub, and is certainly a good chillout spot with a great view.
Crepeology down Leyn Baan Street is your go to place for coffee, snacks, wraps and salads. Their “must try” drink is the mint and lime chiller. A good hangout spot to go with friends and the added bonus is the fast WiFi here.
Barista at Pedlar's Street serves some super sandwiches, coffee, obviously and iced tea. Your “go to” place if time is of the essence.
Spoons also down Pedlar's Street is a nice intimate space that serves a selection of hearty food and refreshing fresh juices. The mango lassi is a great thirst quencher at Spoons. Check out their special menu, specially curated for the literary festival.
Pedlar's Inn down Pedlar's Street is very cozy with a nice ambiance. They offer a good variety of food but it is their desserts that are to die for. There is not a single dessert that can be recommended, one simply must find the time to try them all. If you are all hot and bothered then cool down with one of the best ice creams from their gelato shop which is just across the road.
Deco on 44 is situated down Lighthouse Street. Billed as a posh diner this place is lovely and serves a great selection of cuisine. An added bonus is the friendly staff.
Sugar Bistro at the Dutch Hospital with its ambient and stylish surroundings also offers a great drink and food menu which has both Eastern and Western fare. Their dessert selection is also swoon worthy.
Mama's Rooftop Cafe down Leyn Baan Street is a great place to have lunch. Their specialty is the great Sri Lankan rice and curry they serve. Ask to be seated at the rooftop which affords a nice view of the rooftops of the Fort. It is also a nice place to hangout and unwind in the evenings.
The Original Rocket Burger down Pedlar's Street is your place to go if you need a fast food fix. They serve the best burghers in the Fort.
The Living Room by TPV at Lighthouse Street is recommended if you want to raise the ante and indulge in a pampered evening. The interiors are fab and the cocktail menu with its selection of canapes is the perfect prelude to dinner.
The Tuna and The Crab at the Dutch Hospital serves Japanese fusion food which provides a great respite from other types of cuisine.
If street food is what your craving then try the small roti cart next to the Fort mosque down Rampart Street which serves the best egg roti within the the Fort. The food stall next to the Army camp has great hoppers and pol roti. The lunu miris will set you alight but it really is very tasty!
Lucky Fort Restaurant down Parawa Street is the hands down winner in the rice and curry stakes. They offer a gut busting nine to ten curries with rice which is easily enough for two people and all for under Rs. 1200. Family run, the Lucky Fort Restaurant is homely with good service.
If dining in the Fort gets all too much for you then do venture outside the Fort and try The Old Railway Cafe, at 42 Havelock Place (Canal Road behind the train station) which is run by British fashion designer Catherine Rawson and has a wonderful snack menu and great drinks along with a super shop to simply browse or pick up a one off bargain.
