Gearing up for the party

It hasn’t taken long, but when the word ‘revolution’ gets thrown around these days coupled with a ‘radio’ or two, the mind easily finds its way to Red FM. And at the helm of this vibrant group is Sri Kandakumar or Captain Sri to all those familiar with the airwaves for the past 20 years.

Quite possibly the only man in the country to possess a Masters degree in Radio from the University of London, we sat down with the experienced man of the studios to talk about his career, the latest ventures and of course, the highly anticipated “I Love 90’s” party.

After a bit of a hiatus, you’re permanently on the airwaves again. How does it feel to be back?

Yes, I must say I’m back where I belong! No, really, it must be said I feel 20 years younger than I am, working with such a young, exuberant crowd. These guys really make me feel young again, and you know what? The most important thing is I’m still enjoying myself after all this time.

I haven’t lost any of the zest I had for this industry and the young ones I work with are a major factor for that.

Did you have any challenges in terms of keeping yourself motivated?

Well, it’s a granted thing that the competition is at an all time high and despite all of the challenges, I’m more motivated than at any other time in my career. Like I said, it’s got a lot to do with the people I work with who have helped in putting together the product we try to sell, and that is the best variety you can hope to come across on the airwaves today.

Let’s talk about the variety for a second, how would you describe Red FM?

We focus pre-dominantly on the latest global hits, new music being the way to take things forward. And then we focus on every popular music genre as our ‘specialty’ shows prove. We blend in all the best in contemporary hits as well as the best of the 80’s and the 90’s.

And what of the personnel that make the magic happen?

Our music controller has, in my opinion, the most extensive music knowledge suited for the product we try to put out there, and really struts his stuff, as heard on the airwaves.

And in addition to the good blend of music, our presenters are well informed and have the natural ability to switch on that microphone and adapt to any kind of music, as well as to come across as intellectually capable of making all the different sounds work, keeping listeners engrossed and interested, as well as educated.

You mention the 90’s, appropriate since I was gearing up to talk to you about the “I Love 90’s” party.

It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while and when our channel head, Miss Yasara mentioned it, I jumped at the opportunity to go forward with it.

The 90’s era is one that is very dear to my heart as it is in that period that I made my name as a DJ. It doesn’t matter what kind of music is put out now, and what will be put out in the future, but to my ears nothing beats the 90’s music.

What we can expect at the party?

Basically, the Blue Elephant at The Hilton will resemble a time capsule on the 30th of August as everything you love about the 90’s will be on show that day, not least the best music from the best 90’s DJ’s on the island.

If you could say one thing to all interested in showing up, what would you say?

If you like proper 90’s music, in a good atmosphere with good people and just like to have an all-round good time? The “I Love 90’s” party is the place for you.
