A Workshop on Shakespeare’s Masterpieces by Jerome L. De Silva
The Workshop Players of Colombo are starting off 2016 on a different note, following a year filled with critical acclaim for their marquee production of Les Misérables - the musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name. Adapted by Jerome L. de Silva, one of Sri Lanka’s foremost theatre practitioners, the production drew on the talents of a cast of actors and singers that brought to life the drama and the music from the streets of France to the audiences of Colombo.
This year, Jerome and The Workshop Players will step away from musicals to stage ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ - a festival featuring some of William Shakespeare's best work.

As part of the preparation for the event, a two-day workshop will be held this weekend, to engage thespians in a journey of exploring the intricacies of Shakespeare’s renowned Othello, The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The workshop will be designed and crafted by Jerome, bringing his long-standing passion for Shakespeare’s work and leveraging his experience in Shakespearean theatre of over four decades. His expertise of the texts in discussion both in terms of its rich literary aspect and theatrical dimensions will be introduced to participants at this workshop.
This workshop is a means of engaging students, teachers, actors and directors with an interest in the works of Shakespeare, with the hope of taking participants on a journey that will delve into the essence of the texts in question. Although specially crafted to suit the above-mentioned groups, the workshop is also open for anyone else interested in the timeless work of the Bard.
The workshop will be held on January 9 and 10, 2016 at the NDB Auditorium, Nawam Mawatha, from 10.00am to 4.00pm on both days.
