views 671Two Great Chamber Works By Mozart
The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka (SOSL) presents the second Earle de Fonseka Chamber Music Concert for 2015, on the 24th of July at the Russian Cultural Centre, where two great chamber works by W. A. Mozart will be performed. The two works which are of contrasting character, are the string quintet K 516 and the wind quintet K 452.
Mozart wrote six string quintets and these are considered to be amongst his finest chamber works. The string quintet K 516 which was written around the time of his father’s death is an emotive work with dark colouring. It is performed by Sulara Nanayakkara and Nilupul Silva (violin), Amal Abeysekera and Thivanthi Perera (viola) and Dushy Perera (cello).
The wind quintet K 452 was considered by Mozart himself to be one of his best works. It is a bright work in which Mozart’s mastery of the art of writing for wind instruments is seen to the fullest, where he combines the contrasting tonal qualities of the oboe, bassoon, clarinet and horn with that of the piano, to create the most beautiful melodic and harmonic textures. It is performed by Srimal Weerasinghe (oboe), Vidurinda Samaraweera (horn), Uthsara Malaweera-Arachchi (Bassoon), Louis Perera (piano) and Ajit Abeysekera (clarinet).
The great composers expressed some of their most intimate emotions and thoughts in their chamber works. The Dr. Earle de Fonseka Trust which has as one of its objectives the promotion of chamber music especially among young musicians, is the sponsor of the concert. Admission is by programme, priced at Rs.500, available from the Lionel Wendt.
