Guest performances by ASTERIA Female Voice Choir directed by Mahen Peiris will also add to the splendor of the concert.
We walked in on a rehearsal to get a sneak peak of what the show was about and we were able to speak to some of the students from all three age groups. Here’s what they had to say…
Juniors
1. Gayen – 7 years (S. Thomas College. Mount Lavinia)
My favourite item from the concert is ‘Prince Ali’ and I am very excited about it. I’ve told all my friends to come and watch.
2. Atara – 9 years (Colombo International School)
My favourite item for the concert is ‘Under the sea’. The music is quite catchy and I also like the dancing. I would like to thank the choreographers and aunty for guiding us. Please come watch the show – it is really exciting!
Intermediates
1. Yalindee – 14 years (leading government school)
We are going to be singing songs that are very current like ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. Aunty has been going through the songs with us. Everyone can sing along and take something back from the show at the end.
2. Yelani – 15 years (Methodist College, Colombo 3)
This is the fourth concert and I’ve been singing with aunty for a long time. This time there will be more upbeat songs. Everyone can join in and sing. The choreography is also great. The rehearsals are very noisy and this is my last year with intermediates.
Seniors
1. Ashan – 29 years
I’ve been with the group for around 4/5 years and this is my third concert. We will be doing diverse genres from musicals to contemporary and much more. They have upped the dancing as well so it’s all a good experience. This is definitely something for everyone to enjoy. It is an extremely entertaining experience.
2. Keshini – 24 years
Everything about this concert is special – from song selection, to working with everyone. I’ve been with the school for 3 years now. The concert is going to be different. It’s been fun practicing and I’m sure this will be enjoyed and talked for years.
3. Jayamal – 16 years (S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia)
I joined the school this year and it’s been 6 fun months. Music brings people together – it has happened and we have made so many friends. It’s a good experience. Rehearsals have been really good. This is a concert with a lot of variation. This is the place to be if you want to have fun and sing along!
Choreographers
Keshia Kumaresan (Juniors)
It has been very tiring but at the same time very good. I’m used to working with children and I like it. Sometimes it’s hard to get their attention but they catch up soon. Dazzle has more upbeat numbers and more medleys. The rehearsals have been good and we hope to see everyone at the show.
Ashanti Colombage (Intermediates and Seniors)
It is a lot of fun, challenging and also rewarding working with the students. There is tremendous potential in all of them. Dazzle is no doubt going to be different. There’s variety and a mix of everything. It’s one that should not be missed.
Director – Prashalini Peiris
This year’s concert is one with variety. We have included so many styles ranging from choral – semi classical – pop etc. The kids love concerts and as soon as they finish one they are eager to start on another. They gain a lot with interacting with each other. The rehearsals have been going great and there is a lot of commitment from everyone. The parents have supported us throughout and we are grateful. Our choreographers are close friends and easy to work with. We have around 80 students from the ages 7 – 35 years taking part in the concert this year, singing an array of different genres. I’m sure the audience will enjoy this and we hope to see everyone there.
