‘Contempo’ : Past Bridgetines bringing screen magic back to stage
‘Contempo’ a concert by the Past Pupils of St. Bridget’s Convent is all set to bring in a one-of-a-kind experience for all music lovers once again. Seeking to do something different from their previous production in 2013, ‘Viva La Diva’ which showcased the female powerhouses of song, the choir members were soon providing suggestions of iconic movie music. Thus was “Reel Music” created and is now set to go on the boards on the September 19 and 20 at 7pm.
Headed by Sheranga Perera, the Music Directress for the group, the choir has been busy putting their own spin on much loved songs. The concert, apart from being their second full-length, two-night event, is also a special moment for the members since it will be held at the St. Bridget’s Convent Auditorium. With humble beginnings, ‘Contempo’ has grown from strength to strength and this concert will be a rallying call for school leavers to give back to the alma mater through song.
The evening will showcase a diverse range of movie music spanning from 1939 to 2015 through genres of romance, fantasy, action and drama. Mel Gunasekara, a prolific member of the choir, whose loss was keenly felt throughout the practices, will also be remembered with a special segment.
Milan John, Shalintha Rodrigo and Shehan Wijemanne will showcase their talents on piano, bass and drums respectively to accompany the choristers with enchanting melodies.

It has been an amazing experience being with it from the beginning. It is quite an ambitious concert and this time it is quite special because we are able to perform at our own auditorium.

I have been a part of this choir since 2010 and although we started with guest performances with other choirs, today we are performing on our own and I think it is a great achievement. Another significant fact is that all past pupils are singing in this choir so it has given an opportunity for all of them to have a long-term relationship with school and relive memories.

Contempo has gone a long way and it is a combination of pupils from different batches. Best part of it is that this time we are having it in school.

Personally it is a big achievement for me. ‘Contempo’ is a concert that is performed for 2 nights and initially we had it at the Russian Music Centre but this time we are able to have it in school. All the girls have put in a lot of effort and it will be a totally new experience for all the girls because we are going to sing movie songs from as early as 1939 to present. Hopefully we will be able to pull up a grand show.
Tickets for the show are available at the collegiate school gate from 10:00 to 2:00 pm and 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
