BSC goes Christmassy this December...
It is that time of the year again where you start planning to go all Christmassy as the last month of the year is just a few days away. December, the month of festivities is celebrated with much enthusiasm as Christmas and the dawn of a fresh year is just round the corner. Amidst carol services and other events, the British School of Colombo (BSC) will be organising their annual X’Mas Carnival to spread a feeling of togetherness with good food and a memorable experience to take home. Speaking to the Daily Mirror Life, the Principal of BSC, Dr. John Scarth, President of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Anitha Selvaraj and Treasurer, Vindy De Silva expressed their views about the event.
Give us a brief outline about the event.
The PTA of the school will be organising this event in order to bring the community together. The school comprise of approximately 1300 students of different ethnicities and religions. There are a number of ways that we get together and every year we organise events for Vesak, New Year and Christmas in order to bring everybody together. Last time, the Christmas carnival was attended by over 3000 visitors and it includes many fun-filled activities. Children from ages 2-18 participate in it and have a good time.

For what projects will you be donating the funds raised?
There will be craft stores in order to raise funds for charitable causes. One such project we have joined hands with is the Vision 2020 campaign where we have been actively involved in donating spectacles and during the last year we have donated approximately 400 pairs of spectacles to the visually impaired. In addition to that we have also donated 100 wheelchairs for patients suffering from spinal cord defects. This event is open to the public and anybody can purchase a ticket and visit the carnival.

What are some of the items included in it?
The carnival includes a section for juniors who can have their time with balloon dance items, cotton candy stalls and many other items for their entertainment. In addition to that we have also arranged a papare band to entertain the crowd. There are a few charities run by children and these include the Interact Club, cub scouts and the Hope charity. They too will be joining us in this carnival.

Speaking to us, the Principal of British School Colombo, Dr. John Scarth said, “I think the entire effort put forth by the PTA is quite effective in bringing everybody together to strengthen relationships. All our current parents are putting in their maximum in order to make this a success. We want everybody to get involved and education is not only about books. Children have to be all-rounders. When somebody goes in for an interview they are not asked for their grades in an exam, but their overall capabilities are considered. Education should be perceived through a broader lens and therefore children should be given enough opportunities to explore themselves. Our school children get selected to top universities in the world and this indicates that they have been provided with some quality education.”
