Over the last couple of years, every single time the couple met the press, they had been asked this one question: is there trouble in their marriage? Was there any truth to filmmaker Sudhir Mishra creating a rift between them? And both, Jyoti Randhawa and Chitrangda Singh, consistently denied the rumours.
Not only that, a 'he said, she said' recap might make it look as if everything was hunky dory. But the fact of the matter was, more than over a year ago, when in a strange coincidence, a nasty buzz did the rounds about some nosy neighbour spotting the hubby sneaking into his neighbour 'friend's' house in Gurgaon at the wee hours, Chitrangda had packed her bags and moved to Mumbai.
And she never looked back, at least not towards Gurgaon, where the couple lived. Neither had Jyoti visited her in Mumbai even once - even though he kept up the game saying she was going to be in Delhi for Valentine's, when we'd spoken to him. But she never came, and neither did the duo make a public appearance together when she came to walk the ramp at the India International Jewellery Week.
Those who'd been keeping a close watch, say it's been over a year since they put in an appearance as a couple. But verbally, they always denied the rumours.
Just a couple of months back, Jyoti had dismissed divorce rumours when we'd asked him, saying, "I am a very good husband, I like everything she does... We are not able to meet each other as much as we want to. And we have a son, so we try and match our schedules as much as possible. These days, more often, I am staying at home, taking care of our son than she is, as she has a lot of work. Having said that, I'm completely open to the fact that a woman needs to do what she wants to do."
He'd also told us how she was going to participate in the National Shooting Championships with him.
And Chitrangda, in a separate interview, had told us, "I am lucky Jyoti understands that I have the right to do what I want with my life. He doesn't need to hold my hand at an award function. He travels, puts in a lot of hard work for his sport. But these stories about us not getting along comes up every now and then... guess that's because we are a bit of a unique case. People have still not been able to nail this!"
The only hint that she is not happy, came when we specifically asked about whether she is divorcing Jyoti, and Chitrangda had said, "I don't want to clarify anything. There was a time when I was open about my personal life and all people talked about was whether I was married, divorced, seeing someone... and very little about what I am doing. There are pressures on any relationship. You have to work on it, just as you work on other things... I don't claim to be a superwoman who is managing everything perfectly. I love cinema, it completes me. But that does not mean I put my life on hold. Any working woman will have to manage a lot of responsibilities, not all of them have to be divorced..."
But now, looks like Chitrangda will be divorced to follow her filmi passion, for the couple has filed for divorce at the Gurgaon family court. So the next time we meet them, we can start with the 'are you seeing someone?' questions!
Mutual consent:
Golfer Jyoti Randhawa and actress Chitrangda Singh have been married for 12 years, and have a son, Zorawar. The couple filed for divorce by mutual consent on Friday, at the Gurgaon family court. A few close relatives had accompanied the couple when they came to the court, trying to stay away from the media glare. The case was heard by district judge Baljit Singh, who advised the duo to reconsider their decision and also fixed the next date of hearing for November 11.
