“Once upon a time…” it starts and it will end with a “Happily Ever After”. But did you ever realize that behind each Disney fairytale lies a story untold? Sure Disney always told you the sugar-coated ending but, these original fairytale twists will give you a shock to reconsider your childhood of happy endings.
Sleeping Beauty
When compared to the 1634 novel -The Sun, Moon and Talia by Giambattista Basile, Aurora (now Princess Talia) was not pricked by a spindle, but rather gets a splinter of flax under her fingernail, and falls into a deep sleep. Later, a king finds her lying in the castle and rapes her while unconscious. After nine months, the princess gives birth to twins and the girl twin sucks the flax away from the princess’s finger and she wakes up. The king finds Talia again and they fall in love. But, the king’s wife suspects the king and finds out about Talia and the twins and orders the cook to serve the children as a meal for the king although the cook serves animal meat. The queen orders Talia to be burned in the fire, but the king saves her and orders his wife to be thrown in it. The king rewards the cook for saving Sun and Moon-the kids- and Talia and the king get married and live happily ever after.
Cinderella
You would never hear Cinderella’s stepmother say this in Disney: “Cut off your toe. When you are queen you will no longer have to go on foot”. The fairytale written by the Grimm brothers shows the stepmother telling her stepdaughters to cut off their heels and toes, handing them a knife. But when they journeyed with the prince, pigeons warn him by telling him to look at the slipper now which was-as obvious- full of blood. When the prince finds Cinderella, and marries her, the stepsisters comes for the wedding, to gain favor from Cinderella and share her good fortune but the pigeons who previously warned the prince, pecked out their eyes. Also seen in the Grimm’s tale is that instead of Fairy Godmother, there is a hazel tree planted nearby her mother’s grave and that birds living on it helped her.
The Little Mermaid
Ariel lived happily ever after, but did you know that the original mermaid did not get her happy ending? In Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’, the mermaid trades her tongue (gets it cut off) for legs that feel like they’re being stabbed by knives. And when the prince marries a princess instead of her, she is given a choice to kill the prince or die herself. She loves the prince so much that without killing him, she throws herself into the sea. Because of the good deed she does, the mermaid does not turn into sea foam, but becomes a spirit and joins the daughters of the air.
Snow White
You remember Snow White, with skin fair as snow, hair as black as ebony? Do you remember her stepmother who sent her out to be killed? This next fact might creep you out when I tell you that in the original story by the Grimm brothers, Snow White’s ACTUAL mother is the one who sent her off to be killed because she was too pretty. The queen tells the huntsman to bring Snow White’s heart, liver and lungs to be served for dinner, but the huntsman who takes pity on Snow White brings back the organs of a boar. The evil queen finds out and tries twice to unsuccessfully kill Snow White. The third time she tries, with the poisoned apple the girl faints and never revives. When a prince finds her he carts off her dead body. The servant jostles the coffin and dislodges the poisoned apple. It is also seen that to get revenge on the evil queen, she was ordered to dance to death in red hot iron shoes.
