AVATĀRA : An exhibition by Kanae Tsukahara
Kanae Tsukahara, a self-taught artist from Japan is all set to showcase her latest exhibition for all Sri Lankan art lovers. Born in Kanagawa, Japan, Kanae adores doing her work from Kandy since she thinks that Kandy has all features of a peaceful city. In a casual interview with the Daily Mirror Life, Kane shared her experience being in Sri Lanka and about her exhibition.
Give us an introduction about you.
I am a self-taught artist but not working full time. I love painting and I started off as a comic artist when I was 12 years old. Back then I was working at a Japanese company and once I happen to visit an art exhibition done by a Sri Lankan. Once I saw it I quit my job and started painting. I met very interesting people and thought I too should do an exhibition.
Why do you work from Kandy?
Kandy is a city that reflects the Sri Lankan culture a lot. It has good air and good culture.
What differences do you see in Colombo and Kandy?
Kandy is a peaceful city whereas Colombo is an international city and therefore it is a busy place. I like to learn the traditional Sri Lankan culture and therefore I like staying here. I also witnessed the annual Kandy procession and it was a unique experience for me.
What is the theme of your paintings?
I do not have a particular theme. I draw anything that captures my eyes. In addition to painting I also do sculptures, pottery and even like to read stories and watch movies, take photos and anything that requires creativity.
What is the main challenge you faced when you came here?
Language is a huge challenge because sometimes I cannot connect with the people since they don’t understand what I say and vice versa.
Any message to the art lovers out there?
Do come and visit my exhibition which will be happening on September 17 at the Saskia Fernando Gallery from 6.00 - 8.00pm. It will remain open till October 15, 2015.
