Alvin Lee has died.
The guitarist and founder of Ten Years After - best known for his eleven minute solo during the song 'I'm Going Home' at Woodstock festival in 1969 - unexpectedly passed away in the early hours of yesterday (06.03.13), aged 68.
Alvin been admitted to hospital in Spain for a routine operation, but died from unseen complications.
A statement from his daughter Jasmin, wife Evi and former companion Suzanne, said: "We have lost a wonderful, much-loved father and companion. The world has lost a truly great and gifted musician."
Alvin formed Ten Years After in 1966 and they achieved infamy after their version of 'I'm Going Home' was included in the documentary about event. Ten Years After released 10 albums together, fusing together elements of blues, swing jazz and rock, and scoring hits across Europe and the US.
Alvin left the group in 1975 to start a solo career, which saw him record tracks with stars including George Harrison, Steve Winwood and Mick Fleetwood.
He later formed another rock group, Ten Years Later, who released two albums, 'Ride On' and 'Rocket Fuel' at the end of the 70s.
Alvin's career had continued until his death and in total he released over 20 albums in a 45-year career. His last, 'Still On The Road To Freedom', was released in August 2012.
Paying tribute on his website, Queen guitarist Brian May wrote: "Alvin was a legendary and influential guitarist and very nice bloke. His speed and dexterity, in the days when I would go as a student to the Marquee Club to see Ten Years After, was scary and exciting. He was daring enough to play and sing close to his limit every time."
