“A Celebration of Dance” set to wow audiences this November
The dancers are ready to break a leg at the country's most anticipated dance championship at the Hilton Colombo this November. "A Celebration of Dance" International Ballroom and Latin American Dance Championships is all set to woo dance enthusiasts with unparalleled performances. This years event will also feature phenomenal performances by World Show Dance Championships runners up Sven Ninnemann and Nina Uszkureit.
We caught up with the event’s organiser Dharshan Wijesooriya, about the championship. A name synonymous with Latin American and ballroom dancing, Dharshan Wijesooriya has contributed immensely towards bringing dancesport into the spotlight.
What is this year's theme?
This is the twentieth year that I am organizing this event. Within these two decades dancesport has grown to be what it is today. There are many schools, teachers and competitors now. We celebrate this long journey and the theme is ‘Celebration of Dance’.
What are the categories?
The two main segments are Ballroom and Latin American. Within each segment there will be 10 categories – Junior Under 13, Junior Under 16, Senior, Pre Beginner, Beginner, Novice A and B, Pre Amateur, Rising Star and Amateur.
The event will feature a special performance by Sven and Nina. Tell us a little bit about it.
They are from Switzerland. They were the European Show Dance Champions and Runners Up in World Show Dance Championships. The highlight of the event will be a 5 Dance performance by Sven and Nina.
Tell us about this year's participants.
We have entries from 6 countries, 18 international couples and more than 50 Sri Lankan couples.
Who are the judges?
There will be 8 judges from Australia, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand. They are all licensed Adjudicators of World Dance Council.
Will this year’s event bring something new to the table?
Yes - from the opening to the finale it will be a different program. It’s a surprise.
Why are dance championships important?
Because it gives a chance to a competitor to showcase his or her talent and skills. By competing along with international competitors, our dancers gain confidence and work hard to raise the standards each year.
