Chulakshi Ranathunga, a product of Maliyadewa Balika College, Kurunegala emerged as the Siyatha Miss Sri Lanka for Miss World 2014. Chulakshi is not a stranger to the local modelling arena and so far she has gained lots of recognition for her elegant looks.

Speaking to Life Online, Chulakshi shared her experience as a model whilst also giving a message for amateurs.

How did you initially start off your modelling career?
I initially started modelling as a student of Rozanne Diasz’s modelling academy. After that I participated in a pageant done by Brian Kerkoven. Then in 2013 I participated in the Lux Miss Sri Lanka pageant and won 4 mini titles.

Was that how you got through to the Siyatha Miss Sri Lanka pageant?
Yes, then in 2014 I saw advertisements about the Siyatha Miss Sri Lanka pageant and applied for it. I became the winner in that pageant.

What was your reaction when you heard your name being announced?
Participating in the Miss Sri Lanka pageant again was a challenge for me because many people told me that re-applying for the same thing would be inappropriate. But I took up the challenge and applied. I was overwhelmed when I heard my name being announced because it was actually a surprise for me.

The theme for this pageant is ‘Beauty with a purpose’. Did you get involved in any social service work after winning the title?
I have been working with disabled children especially children with mental disorders. It’s a pleasure for me to spend time with them. I try to help them whenever I can. They like to spend time with others and therefore I always believe that they should be given more attention.

Have you participated in any international pageants?
I have been to China and have participated in a contest called the Best Model pageant. I have also participated in another pageant in England.

What message do you have to give to amateurs?
They have to be humble in whatever they do. Never show that you are proud and always try to respect others, especially the seniors in the field. Although you fail, you should never give up and one day you will definitely reach your goal.
