Taking the spotlight away from the bride and groom, this week we are focusing on the wedding party. How can we forget the bridesmaids, the groomsmen, the flowergirls and our pageboys? So we interviewed 24 year old Shenali de Silva who was a bridesmaid just last week for the wedding of her best friend Shrinika. With the wedding fresh on her mind - who else is better to answer our questions about the woes and joys of being a bridesmaid?
Was this your first time being a bridesmaid?
Nope, this was the fourth time I became a bridesmaid but it was definitely more special because it was my best friend’s wedding!
What did you have to do as a bridesmaid?
Apart from the usual photographs and moral support, I was given the honour of helping the bride with the veil while she was at church. So I was constantly running up and down, fixing her veil, carrying her bouquet etc. I also gave the wedding toast with my other best friend (Shalini) who is getting married next month! (I’m her bridesmaid too! yay!)
Did you have to organize a hen party? If so, what did you do?
Of course! The hen party is the best part about a wedding. We had a joint bridal shower because both my best friends got married a month apart. It was a very classy affair. The theme was “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and it was a typical English afternoon tea with pretty china teacups and finger sandwiches, scones and jam catered by ‘Dotties Vintage Tea’. The friends of the brides all wore black dresses while the brides wore white dresses and tiaras.
So now that you have all the background experience, what are your do's and don’ts of planning a hen party?
DO keep the number of guests small, so it doesn’t get overcrowded and everyone can have fun. Make sure there are plenty of food and drink and really good music. You DON’T have to spend an exorbitant amount of money, just make sure the bride has fun and make it an unforgettable night for her!
What was the best and worst part of being a bridesmaid?
Best part is definitely the honour of being a part of the bride’s special day! All the hair and make-up and dolling up, it’s a lot of fun! I can’t really say there’s anything “worst” but it’s very tiring! Looking back on it, it’s all worth it though!
Being a bridesmaid, you have to be on your feet since early morning. How did you manage to endure the whole eventful day?
I slept really early the night before, and munched on sandwiches and coffee during the day. We also had a quick nap between photoshoots and church. The heat and the sweat makes it unbearable though!
The funniest thing you had to do as a bridesmaid?
The funniest thing is probably the awkward couple shot you do with the groomsmen! It’s especially awkward if you’ve just met them that day, and the photographer asks you both to stare in to each other’s eyes! I just kept looking at the hair on his head and avoided his eyes.
What’s the one thing every girl should know before agreeing to be a bridesmaid?
Don’t complain, no matter how tired you are! Don’t let the bride ever hear you say anything negative because she’s already under heaps of stress! Just have fun and stay positive for the sake of the bride and stay hydrated!
