Why do you love travel?

Well, we live in a mad world and sometimes you need a time out. So getting away from the chaos of routine and getting a bit of adventure or relaxation is one of the main reasons I love to travel. Besides, I have the ideal ‘trip’ partner in my son, he is ever ready for an adventure.

Your favourite travel destination and why?

Outside of Sri Lanka I would say Paris, there is such a romantic aura about Paris, it simply takes my breath away. Within Sri Lanka my favourite is Haputale, the mist, the cool winds, the scenery and the silence is what makes it so special.

What do you need for a perfect holiday?

My son, a good book, a bit of adventure, yummy food, AND a place that makes for good memories.

In which country have you felt most at home?

Malaysia – it feels like home.

Most unusual souvenir you have brought home?

I usually pick up a fridge magnet from every single place I have visited. Other than for that I haven’t really picked up too many souvenirs except for a little trinket box of Goddess Isis and tokens from Macau.

Favourite holiday discovery?

Food has always been a great holiday discovery. A quaint café in  Catalonia, Barcelona I can’t remember the name - they had the most amazing goat cheese salad – I was in foodie heaven. But then I also loved the Mummy ride at Universal Studios, it gave me such a rush.

Worst holiday or travel experience?

Well, of all the places I have ever been too, I have to say, Islamabad; I didn’t feel very comfortable, we had gone there during a tense time and the discomfort was more out of fear.

Best piece of travel advice?

Understand the culture of a place before you go there, respecting the place you visit and the people that live there is very important. Never go on a holiday with stressful people, don’t keep visiting the same place every time you go on a holiday, be adventurous ‘cos nothing makes up for the memories and the different types of people you meet. AND most importantly make sure you always carry extra underwear!

Your top five travel destinations?

1. Paris – for the romance
2. Antwerp – its quaint and charming
3. Malaysia – great shopping
4. Thalpe – the perfect sea-side escape
5. Haputale – peace and contentment.

What has travel taught you?

It has taught me to adapt to any situation and it has also taught me the value of building friendships.

What is the country you will never go back to and why?

I don’t think I have ever felt like not going back to any place I have visited, good or bad.

Which country did you taste the best ever cuisine?

Spain – every night was a new experience.

Next travel destination?

Malaysia.
