Been There Done That : Martijn and Roos van Amstel

This week on ‘Outdoor Weddings', we speak to Martijn and Roos van Amstel who decided to have their destination wedding in our beautiful island. Outdoor weddings are progressively becoming the ‘it’ thing to do and they share their thoughts on what it’s like to plan one.

Tell us a little about yourselves.

Martijn : I’m Martijn van Amstel, a consultant and my wife Roos, a project manager at UNICEF  from Holland decided to get married in Sri Lanka as my heritage is from Sri Lanka. Plus our parents wished it as well.

How did you meet?

Martijn : As I was a consultant and Roos was a project manager, we happen to meet at a business situation.

What kind of a wedding did you have?

Martijn and Roos : We had an outdoor wedding in mind with a rustic theme.

Why did you decide to do an outdoor wedding?

Martijn and Roos : Well, because we are from Holland and work in countries such as Canada and England where the climate was terribly cold we wanted to give our guests an experience of the tropical weather that paradise (Sri Lanka) had to offer.

What was the most challenging part about planning an outdoor wedding?

Martijn and Roos : Honestly speaking it was not a challenge to us as we decided to hire the service of a wedding planner of Yolande and it was up to her to make our dream a reality.

Were you ever scared about the weather ruining your perfect day and did you have a backup plan?

Martijn and Roos : Yes, we did have a situation where the ocean had come ashore. We had never seen the location up until one week prior to the wedding. The Bottom Line team had come up with a back-up plan which was to re-locate within the premises.

Was there anything extra you had to think and plan out when you were having an outdoor wedding?

Martijn : All the pros and cons with regards to a beach wedding came from the wedding planner. But Roos wore wear high heels at the beach which wasn’t as big an issue because Bottom Line organized a boarded floor for the bride to walk down at the ceremony.

What was the best part about your wedding?

Martijn and Roos : We met relatives that I had never seen and it was really awesome to find hospitality and how accommodating the planner and the team were.

As a couple who has the experience – what’s the one thing you would say to anyone planning an outdoor wedding?

Martijn and Roos : In all honesty, we don’t have much experience as our whole wedding was planned and executed by our wedding planner. The one thing I would say to anyone planning an outdoor wedding is that you need to hire a planner that does not pressurize you in hiring their services and can patiently deal with the clients. I think this is why we decided to hire The Bottom Line as our wedding planner. Unlike the other wedding planners, she would answer all the questions we had asked her with a valid point. I think this went to show her empathetic side and was positivity to us.
