Past Pupils of Bishop’s and S. Thomas College ready to thrill theatre goers

The cast of Divorce Me, Darling!, is  tirelessly rehearsing, dancing, singing and acting to bring out the best of this dazzling musical on the boards of the Bishop’s College, Auditorium on 18, 19 and 20 March 2016.

The musical brings together a galaxy of stars - all past pupils of Bishop’s College and S.  Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.

Divorce Me, Darling! is nostalgic and an amusing take-off of the musical comedies of the 1930s. It is a sequel to the popular musical The Boy Friend, which captures the spirit of the 1920s.

The plot is woven around intrigue, excitement and fun and features a host of happy go lucky and lovable characters.

As rehearsals are underway, we give you a peek at some of the characters.

Dulcie, naughty after a decade of marriage

To start, is Mariam Waddood, taking the character of Dulcie Dubois. Married to Alphonse Dubois, Dulcie, is terribly bored after 10 years of marriage. She is one of three naughty wives who are the protagonists of the musical. Dulcie, and her two best friends desert their husbands to have a ‘playful’, holiday on their own. Dulcie is the most outspoken and flirtatious of the wives. She meets her ‘old fling’ on her trip, which leads to a whole lot of drama, confusion and a lot of ‘excitement’.

A lawyer and a proud Bishopian, Mariam works for Women In Need and is committed  to eradicate violence against women and children. Mariam’s passion for music and drama started when she was around 6 years of age. A student of Mrs. Celine De Alwis, ‘Divorce Me Darling’, is yet another BC production she is acting in.

“Being on the cast of DMD has been an absolute delight. I’m enjoying my role as a flirtatious “naughty wife”. The songs and dances are a lot of fun, and the past pupils of both schools have been simply awesome. It has been a super experience, says Mariam.

Nancy - lovable and funny

Kavindi Wijesekerais a women’s rights activist with a penchant for theatre. She plays Nancy Lebrun. Kavindi, also known as Kay/Kar/Kiki, is also an accomplished designer and trains women in skills to empower themselves.

“Nancy Lebrun is me. I’m the slow and spaced out character of the three naughty wives, I’m so spaced out I forget where I take a holiday to! I am married to my handsome Husband, Pierre Lebrun, who I’m not too happy with at the moment. But I do love him dearly. Nancy is the character that everyone finds amusing. I’m so glad I’m a part of this amazing cast, who are now my family,” states Kavindi.

Sandharu Ferdinando, steps into the character of Pierre Lebrun, one of the husbands. Pierre is passionately in love with his wife, Nancy. However when she’s not around he gets carried away. Sandharu is a newscaster. He loves to travel and take on new challenges.

“While being involved in theatrical productions at STC, I never had the opportunity to get involved in “joint productions”.  So this is an exciting opportunity! Practices have been tiring, but we have a great bunch here. It has been an incredible experience”, he maintained.

Divorce Me Darling! is directed by Thushara Hettihamu, assisted by Jith Peiris and Nafeeza Amiruddeen. Musical direction is by Dmitri Gunatilaka and choreography by Menik Neydorff.
