views 1924Darshi Keerthisena is a name synonymous with batik in Sri Lanka. The renaissance of batik especially amongst the younger generation can be attributed to Darshi's skills in injecting a new artistic flair to her batik creations. Her travels to various destinations have inspired her creativity.
Why do you love travel?
I love to see the world, and as a designer I love to see new fashion. Learning about other cultures opens one’s mind to new possibilities.
Your favourite travel destination and why?
New York and London. I love melting pots, and both are overflowing.
What do you need for a perfect holiday?
Good company and a nice place to stay.
In which country have you felt most at home?
England, because I have some good friends there and I’ve spend most of my time outside Sri Lanka there.
Most unusual souvenir you have brought home?
A carpet.
Favourite holiday discovery?
Vegetarian bacon. I’m a vegetarian - this is about as good as it gets.
Worst holiday or travel experience?
Stayed in a bad neighbourhood in Paris once, a long time ago. Fortunately moved out the very next day to a better place, and Paris has been wonderful on every visit ever since.
Best piece of travel advice?
Ask a local where to go, to get a more authentic and less touristy experience.
Your top five travel destinations?
New York, London, Paris, Florence, Chennai (amazing choice of fabrics!)
What has travel taught you?
To be independent and open-minded.
What is the country you will never go back to and why?
None yet.
Which country did you taste the best ever cuisine?
USA: lots of great vegetarian restaurants in New York and Los Angeles.
