All those lingering question about your wedding décor is answered by Keshini Peiris.
When we say ‘floral decorations’, what exactly comes within that definition?
Floral decoration should cover from the basic buttonhole to the headdress, the bouquets, the car décor, the entire church décor, the poruwa or throne décor to the entire hall décor. This can also cover the cake structure, the cake boxes and the cake trays as well. In short whatever you do with flowers do fall in to this category.
What is the hardest part about creating floral decorations for a wedding?
Making a bride's dream come into reality within a very limited period. When I say this - it refers to the time available for a florist to do either a church or a hall in few hours while putting all the little details that had been agreed before in place and to make sure that everything is perfect when the couple walks into the venue.
Can you give us some tips for brides? What’s the process of working with a florist from beginning to end?
A bride should set aside time to have a serious discussion with the florist, where we could gather information in visualizing the big picture of the day of the wedding. She should come with her ideas first, then we could discuss the possibilities of creating her idea and in certain cases the practical side as to why it can’t be done can be explained.
What should a client know before meeting with a florist?
The bride to be should have a basic idea of what she is going to have, the look and feel of her special day. She should have the colour samples ready and should be capable of making the florist understand her ideas so that we could be a part of her dream.
What are creative ways to use flowers while keeping costs down?
I think if you need to come down on the cost it can be done by using a mix of both natural and artificial flowers where a florist will have a range of flowers and colours to work with .But it’s the duty of the florist to select the most natural looking artificial flowers to give quality to the final product.
How far in advance should the couple book the florist?
The florist should be booked as early as you book the person whom you will be dressed so that they can reserve the date for you. If you are planning to go with a themed wedding at least three months will be required for the florist to prepare herself and get the stuff in place.
What are some tips for choosing arrangements that work within a budget?
If you refrain from going for a themed wedding or going for the unusual stuff you could limit your expenses. If the florist doesn’t have to buy new stuff especially for you and the colours that will be used are not the modern ones you could be within a reasonable budget. I think you should set aside around 10% of your expenses for the flowers and the floral related stuff. But it is not limited - the more you could afford the more we could do.
How should the poruwa, the deco’s and the centrepieces differ from each other?
Well I think it should not differ it should blend with each other. For example if a traditional poruwa is selected the rest of the décor should complement with each other with a traditional touch. You should not go for a traditional poruwa and a modern settee back and the centrepieces with candles. When you walk in to a hall everything should be in harmony including the cake structure as well.
What’s the one mistake every couple keeps making but shouldn’t?
Well I think the settee back should be grand but elegant, yet when the couple is seated they should be highlighted. Flowers should only enhance the beauty of the bride and the groom and not take away the attention from the couple.
