While the Fairway Galle Literary Festival kicks into high gear, don't forget to ensure your health and safety during the festival. Here are some tips to help you survive the festival and have fun too.
1. Smother yourself in sunscreen as there will be a fair bit of walking between the various locations. So ensure you slap on lots of sunscreen. Sunglasses and a hat will also help shield your face and scalp from those harsh equatorial rays.
2. Plan your schedule wisely, and mark out the events you want to attend and plan your journey between each location so that you can arrive refreshed and not all hot and bothered.
3. Depending on the timing of your events, eating and drinking might take a bit of planning. Carrying a water bottle with you at all times is an absolute must and if peckish make sure you have some munchies in your bag. But please don’t attempt a chow down during the events.
4. Pack your kit bag wisely. If you have planned a few post event nocturnal visits to bars and restaurants then ensure you have a small torch in your bag to help you find your way. While most parts of the Fort are well illuminated it does no harm in carrying a small torch. Include some pain relief tablets if the sun gives you a headache, some mozzie repellent and some tablets to combat an upset tummy should you suffer from a bout of Delhi belly. A few wet wipes will also not go amiss to refresh yourself during the day.
5. Electronic etiquette is most important. Ringtones which rudely interrupt sessions are a no no. Remember to put your phone on silent and if you need to take an urgent call then go outside. If you need to take a photograph do it discreetly without interfering another's vision of the proceedings.
