$1 million worth of Chopard jewels have been stolen at Cannes.
Local police have confirmed that expensive jewellery from the Swiss luxury brand - which creates the prestigious Palme d'Or prize and other trophies for the annual Cannes Film Festival - were taken from a hotel room belonging to a Chopard employee on Thursday evening (16.05.13).
The jewels were meant to be worn on the red carpet by some of the A-list celebrities who are in town for the festival, but the precious trinkets were looted from the Suite Novotel hotel, which is located about 10 minutes from the Croisette, where the gala is taking place.
Chopard has a strong presence at Cannes every year, and stars including model Cara Delevingne, Julianne Moore, Lana Del Rey and Cindy Crawford were all adorned in the brand's jewellery at the opening of Cannes on Wednesday (15.05.13).
Ironically, the heist took place the same night Sofia Coppola's new teen burglary movie 'The Bling Ring' screened at the competition.
The film, which stars Emma Watson, is based on a real life group of celebrity-obsessed teenagers who broke into the Los Angeles homes of A-list celebrities - including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox and Orlando Bloom - and made away with more than $3 million worth of luxury goods.
