As we get older, our bodies change, particularly after we reach 50  years and we may have various health issues. We spoke to Consultant Family Physician Dr Sarath Paranavitane to learn more about this. According to Dr Paranavitane, reaching the age of 50 is a significant milestone, and it’s important to be aware of the health issues that can arise and the medical tests that can help detect them early.

According to him the following is an overview of common illnesses and recommended medical tests for both men and women at this age.

Common health issues

  • High Blood Pressure: As blood vessels become less flexible with age, high blood pressure becomes more common. It’s a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
  • Diabetes: The risk of developing diabetes increases with age. Diabetes can lead to complications like heart disease, kidney disease, and vision problems.
  • Heart Disease: Plaque build-up in the arteries can lead to heart disease. The risk increases significantly after 50.
  • Obesity: Being overweight is linked to numerous chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.
  • Osteoporosis: This condition weakens bones, making them more prone to fractures. It’s particularly common in postmenopausal women.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): This lung disease can cause breathing difficulties and is often linked to smoking and inhaled bio-mass fuel. Hearing Loss: Age-related hearing loss can start to become noticeable at 50.

Recommended Medical Tests at 50

  • Blood Pressure Check: Regular monitoring is crucial to detect and manage high blood pressure.
  • Cholesterol Screening (Lipid Profile): High cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. It’s recommended to get this test every 4-6 years. Need to fast for 12 hours.
  • Fasting Blood Sugar Test: Screening for diabetes or prediabetes is important to catch the condition early.
  • Colonoscopy: Starting at age 45, this test helps detect colon cancer early. Other options include faecal occult blood tests and sigmoidoscopy.
  • Mammogram: Women should have regular mammograms to detect breast cancer early.
  • Bone Density Test: This test helps diagnose osteoporosis and assess fracture risk. Osteoporosis is diagnosed by doing a Dexa scan.
  • Prostate Cancer Screening: Men should discuss with their doctor whether to start screening for prostate cancer at age 50. The test is called  PSA.
  • Thyroid Function Test: This test can detect thyroid issues, which are more common in women over 50.
  • Eye Exam: Regular eye exams can detect vision problems and diseases like glaucoma. You need to consult an eye surgeon.

Staying proactive about health through regular check-ups and screenings can help manage and prevent many of these conditions. If you have any concerns, it’s always best to consult with your healthcare provider.
