Ginza is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants to start operations in Colombo. When they started up in 1987 they were at the Hilton Colombo. Now located at the picturesque Waters Edge, this restaurant serves authentic Japanese cuisine with a variety of Teppanyaki, Sushi, Sashimi, Yakitori and many more delicious preparations. We visited this restaurant for dinner recently to check out what they have to offer. 


Ambience 

The elegantly decorated interior makes you feel very homely and comfortable. There are also the private dining areas if you want to have some privacy. If you choose to sit on the verandah the view is absolutely awesome. I could recommend the verandah without any hesitation as this would be a beautiful experience. 

Food 

We started off with a Mixed Sashimi Platter (Rs. 3830/-). The assorted cuts were very fresh and succulent;  and the portion was a rather generous one. 

For Makis we tried out the Ikura Uramaki (Rs. 1570/-) which was a maki with salmon and avocado and also the Spicy Tuna Maki (4 pieces for Rs. 435/- ). I liked the Spicy Tuna as it was more flavoursome than the Ikura Uramaki. You can order portions of the Makis in half, which is a good option, as you can have two different types instead of one. 

The Tempura Moriawase (Rs. 1730/-) is a mixed Tempura Platter with fried assorted seafood and vegetables, and this was quite delicious. The batter itself was very tasty and crisp. 

Gyoza (Rs. 810/-), the pan fried dumplings were stuffed with minced pork and vegetables. 

The Wafu Steak (Rs. 2500/-) is a Serloin Beef Steak made according to a Japanese recipe and topped with mushrooms and onions. The beef was soft and quite tasty. 

The Garlic Rice (Rs. 870/-) was also a yummy addition to order. Even by itself this sticky rice preparation is super. 

For dessert we tried out the Assorted Ice Cream (Rs. 600/-). The three flavours of ice cream were black sesame, red bean and green tea. I’m actually not a great fan of green tea ice cream so I can’t say much about it. But I really enjoyed the black sesame flavour. It had little seeds that you could bite into. The red bean ice cream was also quite nice.

Service 

Mr. Balasuriya the owner of the restaurant and his team of smiling and obliging staff made sure our experience was really special. 


Note: Every last Saturday of the month there is a Japanese High Tea at Ginza on the Edge for Rs. 2000/- nett.
