Walking into Yum Yum Fine Foods, I can only describe it as the perfect place for any candy lover. Rows and rows of colourful gummies, licorice, marshmallows, sour belts, toffees, bubble gum and chocolate grab your attention as your mind tries (and fails) to decide what you’d like to sample first, or the bigger question - what you’d like to purchase to take home.
Having been open for just two weeks, Yum Yum Fine Foods has garnered a favourable response from customers already, as they stock a large selection of candy ranging in variety and priced rather decently too.
Owner of the store, Ahsab Ilyas tells me that Sri Lanka has a huge demand for candy, especially if it is available in several different types. “We really wanted to promote the selection of candy, because we find that there is a huge market for it here, and who can say no to candy?” He went on to explain that the candy sold is Halal, and are imported from Malaysia, Italy and Spain thus ensuring the best quality.
Yum Yum stocks Belgian chocolate candy, which range in variety from chocolate covered fruit to nuts and muesli. The range features milk, dark, white and white yoghurt chocolate. Rs.480 will fetch you 100gms but customers are free to create their own mix of chocolate and the final price will depend on the weight of the candy.
There are 18 varieties of marshmallows, including delicious jam-filled ones in addition to plain flavours in a range of colours and shapes. An unusual flavour available is coffee, and Ahsab explains that it isn’t a strong flavour but subtly sweet.
Moving on to the gummies and licorice, there are over 150 varieties for customers to choose from and they are available in an assortment of flavours.
Other varieties of candy include the licorice in bright, exciting colours, the mixture of jellybeans in assorted flavours, the sugar-sprinkled sour belts in strawberry, raspberry, cola and green apple flavours, the fudge squares in chocolate, vanilla and a mix of both, the range of chewy toffees, bubblegum in exciting shapes and colours and sugar-free chewing gum.
A bag weighing 100gms will cost you Rs.280 but as with the chocolate, customers are free to create their own mix of assorted candy and the final price will depend on the weight.
Dried fruit and nuts are also available, and customers can choose from a variety of pistachios, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts and dried chickpeas. The store also stocks other products such as hot chocolate mix, fudge cream and topping, biscuits, chocolate shavings (for cakes and desserts), crushed tomato paste cans, savoury and sweet pastry shells, chocolate cups, vol-au-vent pastry cases, cream cheese, olives, olive oil, a whole range of Cadbury chocolate bars and assorted beverage cans.
The candy sold in the store is available in bulk form too. Should you want a particular item that isn’t available at the store, you can request for it and Yum Yum will try their best to introduce it to the store. Ahsab says that they are planning to add more items to the store on a regular basis so customers will have more choice. The store will also introduce candy party packs for customers soon.
Yum Yum Fine Foods is located at No.21, Kawdana Road, Dehiwala and they are on Facebook too so check the page for regular updates, information and contact details. They are open from 10AM-7.30PM everyday.

Oct 25, 2013 at 12:00 amAs much as it is nice to see new ideas, shops, restaurants popping up in Sri Lanka, why Yum Yum Candy shop calls it "fine foods"? Hope people realize that sugar is NOT a "fine" food. People are already "sugar high" here in SL and these foods will not help the ever rising diabetic epidemic.

That is why the shop offers sugar free candy also.!I think it is being conscious of its customers requirements, because I was told that the candy with sugar content was for the kids while a sugar free variety is available for the health conscious.
