I personally feel that you can really appreciate a good meal after delving into the dessert as it is bound to leave a lasting impression. Colombo is now has a number places from where you can order your delicious desserts but having tried Tiras Home Made Hoodies, I’d suggest you give it a try.
The name behind Tiras is Nirupa Homer- Vanniasinkam. Just a short chat with her and you know that she doesn’t JUST make her desserts, in fact, it is quite clear that she makes them with so much detail, passion and love for all things sweet.
“My unique selling proposition is, if it isn’t good enough to give my family, it isn’t good enough to sell,” as she uses only the best ingredients while paying attention to every little detail, be it the perfectly chopped cashew nuts, essences, fresh cream or chocolate.
She even pays attention to the packaging (including gift tags) as well as labels indicating every ingredient keeping in mind different palates and allergy indications, while also indicating storage details.
Nirupa has always had an interest in baking cakes and making desserts, which she feels comes from her mum who used to make a delicious desserts and cakes on a Sunday. It started off with small orders during the week, where she would bake a cake before leaving to work, come back home, ice it and send it off.
However, six months after the birth of her third child, orders started coming in and she decided it was time to venture into making these home-made goodies on a full time basis.
Her first sale was in December 2009 at Crescat – the response was enough to get her started and Tiras came into being. Thanks to the support of her husband, as well as her sisters-in-law, who she says are pillars of strength and not forgetting her trusty helper, she manages to get through the day, juggling her time between her three adorable kids and her passion for sweets.
Nirupa had prepared a number of amazing looking desserts when I met her and I can tell you, they were not just delicious looking, they actually tasted great too. It is tough to find a moist and chocolatey chocolate cake but Tiras does a pretty good one – Fudge Nudge – with a velvety smooth icing topped with cashew nuts is simply divine. While her Love Cake – Nuts n’ Love Cake, packed with loads of cashew nuts is delicious. She also does a moist Date & Nut Cake with almond frosting.
Nirupa’s signature dish is her Chocolate Biscuit Pudding – it consists of four layers of biscuit and a delicious dark chocolate mousse filling and topped off with nuts…. Yumm… I found another fantastic Tiramisu packed with Kahlua – which must be eaten 24 hours after it’s been prepared, and yes it definitely hits the spot, making you swoon in sheer joy!
When it comes to seasonal desserts, Nirupa says “I make the most of out of seasonal produce such as pineapple and mango and therefore have a classic Pineapple Gateau, as well as a Pineapple Crumble and a Mango Soufflé made with fresh Villard mangoes, at the moment.” While all you calorie conscious ones also have the option of choosing from a range of low-calorie desserts like her Blueberry Yoghurt Shots with Cookie Crumbs, which is quite delicious.
Her focus on small portions of desserts – the shot glass concept – is a great idea for dinner parties as it ensures not just the ideal burst of flavour but also less wastage and easy clean up afterwards! Nirupa also makes the tradition baked cheesecake with Philadelphia Cream Cheese which she says has got positive reviews but having sampled everything she’d prepared I just didn’t have enough room to try it out!
A few new desserts will be on offer from October 2013 (Tiras’ Fourth Anniversary), so do give them a try. While her Love Cake, Jaggery Cake and Date & Nut Cake can be packaged securely for overseas clients.
