Just a few strides away as you enter the Kingsbury Hotel their laid back High Tea diner welcomes you. The view of the plush blue ruffles on the pool, and the harbour just beyond is an overwhelming yet serene image that the French windows allow. Before even seeing or tasting the food, I decided the view is worth visiting this High Tea. The Kingsbury High Tea has its best attraction in the scenic appeal.

A sandwich bar, where requests are undertaken and are prepared in the setting of a show kitchen kicks off the High Tea from the harbour end. A range of vegetarian and non vegetarian fillers and bread options are yours to choose from. A plate full of tuna croissants and vege sandwiches is placed alongside the sandwich bar. There are bread/bun options as well as typical Sri Lankan evening tea options which certainly add some variety to this celebrated English tradition.

Being a particular fan of seafood, I was delighted to see some of the savoury options they had listed out. The seafood doughnut and the seafood pizza, which I gladly donned on to my plate, turned out to be two of my favourites. Together with the thousand island sauce they served, the crispy savouries would please any seafood lover.  Other savoury options include the beef ball, chicken yakitori, spring rolls, vege patties and so on. Variety is a plus at the place because you find everything from crab wontons to coconut crumbed prawns and tangy chutneys and sauces.  Confectionery options consist the likes of pancake (again made to order), chocolate fudge, brownies, strawberry tart and doughnut. Kids will find the chocolate fountain interesting as well.

I cannot forget to mention their beverage options. I liked the idea of the mocktail corner in particular. Mocktails are made by a specialist upon order, and I was offered a mix of strawberry and mango and found the flavour refreshing, naturally. Tea and coffee, both iced and hot along with juices complete the high tea experience at Kingsbury.

The Kingsbury high tea commences around 3 p.m. everyday and goes on till about 6 p.m. The place is usually buzzing with gatherings, the time being a convenient one for those returning from work, housewives, friends and colleagues to meet. The options served are not the same everyday and you will be delightfully surprised with fresh additions to the menu everyday. With a next to perfect ambience, I would have preferred a better standard of service nevertheless.

The venue can be ideal for gatherings, mainly because gift vouchers are on offer and for every 10 vouchers, 2 will be given on complimentary basis. The High Tea is priced at Rs. 1400 (all inclusive) and you can make your reservations at [email protected].  Pictures were  provided by Prishan Pandithage
