Last weekend having visited the cooling hills of Kandy I got a chance to sample a truly scrumptious dessert that ignited every taste bud in sweet delight.

Normally in our household anything chocolate goes, but this apple crisp pizza terribly excited the kids, partly because it was called ‘pizza’ and with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream they were introduced to a whole range of flavors. A very versatile dessert which can be dressed up with lashings of cream or custard while still holding its ground on its own in lunchboxes or picnic snacks.

I adore this dessert for several reasons one mainly because my children eat fruit and secondly its multitude of ingredients send an enticing aroma of flavors that fill my kitchen and reminds me of a French patisserie.

Have a slice of my apple crisp pizza, it’s a slice of heaven on a plate!

Ingredients:

Pastry for a single-crust pie

2/3 cup sugar

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon

4 medium baking apples, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices

Ingredients for the topping:

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

1/3 cup rolled oats

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

 1/4 cup butter, softened

Directions

Roll pastry to fit a 12-in. pizza pan; fold under or flute the edges. Combine sugar, flour and cinnamon in a bowl. Add apples and toss.

Arrange the apples in a single layer in a circular pattern to completely cover pastry. Combine the first five topping ingredients; sprinkle over apples.

Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until apples are tender. Remove from the oven and immediately drizzle with caramel topping or dip. Serve warm with ice cream if desired.
