Premium Quality Cheese

Premium quality cheese is certainly hard to find in Sri Lanka. And like me, if you aren’t a fan of boring old cheddar cheese, your choices tend to be quite limited.

However, if you are willing to pay a premium price, you can most certainly order some premium quality imported cheese from Mega Trading (Pvt) Ltd. The cheese is imported from Holland and is mostly sold to clients in the hospitality industry and even big corporations. But if you are a real cheese buff, you can place an order with them and pick up your preferred cheese up or even have it delivered to you.

“The cheese come in wheels and balls and initially if you are not too keen on purchasing a large amount of cheese, the best option would be to order a cheese platter” says Ravi Marcelline, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Mega Trading (Pvt) Ltd adding that it gives his customers a chance to try out the cheese in smaller quantities and then pick up more later on. The little wooden platters are filled with four types of cheese, sealed and labelled neatly.

I had the opportunity to have a few nibbles of Mimolette and Gouda with mustard seeds. I quite liked both these cheeses. The former is really appealing to the eye with its bright tangerine colour which is derived from the annatto plant. The Mimolette, is aged for nine months and is really rich in taste with a combination of fruity and nutty flavours.

I was told that it would look great topped on spinach salads while it also pairs well with apples and pears. Made using full cream pasteurised cow’s milk, Gouda with mustard seeds is a more mild tasting cheese. The mustard seeds in this smooth and creamy cheese give it a hint of spice and a bit of a tangy sensation as well, which is most certainly appealing.

I was unfortunately unable to taste anymore but after having tasted these two, chances are, I might try out a few more in time. And with Christmas around the corner, it might be the ideal gift to pair with a bottle of wine for the season.
