The Mews needs no introduction, having gained more reputation than the street it’s located in, Park Street Mews is a favourite dining venue, be it for breakfast, lunch, dinner or anything in between. The open structure with its high ceilings and open doors is a welcoming one if nothing else and merges simplicity with minimalist charm, bringing to life one of Colombo’s most loved diners.
The operating menu is an all inclusive, fine collection of dishes which offers a wide variety of choices. A special note of mention should be paid for the creativity of the menu; the blend of favourite ingredients to create dishes that seem irresistible to any foodie appears to be an operating principle behind the design of the menu.
Any patron at the Mews is guaranteed to need a few minutes to make up his or her mind. In addition to its offer of variety the Mews also serves customer favourites like all day breakfast in the weekends to its patrons, another greatly raved about part of the menu.
The Mushroom Ravioli (Rs.550), a classic Italian dish of pasta stuffed with parmesan and in the case of this variation mushroom as opposed to the most favoured bacon was a mix of good and bad. The sauce which the ravioli was served in tasted every bit as good as it could possibly be, the rich texture and the flavour were a sensational touch to the ravioli.
The sauce was so rich that I ended up dipping the slightly disappointing quesadilla in the sauce to rid it of its blandness. The ravioli aside from the sauce was average, the mushroom was a nice touch and seemed a suitable variation to the Italian classic but a little more parmesan may have been in order.
The lasagna (beef Rs.600) was a delight in itself, the rich layer of cheese and beef were very smooth, to the point that the layers remained forgotten. The dish was very filling and very well flavoured with hints of the sauces playing subtly with the beef.
The lasagna was one of the favourites of the night and is surely a treat for anyone with a love of meat and cheese layered with layers of pasta. A very well served dish.
The Chicken quesadilla with mozzarella (Rs.550) was the most disappointing dish served thus far owed to the fact that it was rather parched and slightly bland. The tortilla tasted dry and lacked texture while the filling did little to salvage the dish. A lack of mozzarella was the most likely problem and the absence of much flavour in the filling.
To make bad matters worse, the potato wedges were dried out as well. Portion size serves one person marginally although and isn’t very filling. The chicken quesadilla was in no way a personal favourite.
Prawn & melted cheese with basil mayo & green chilli (Rs.550), by far the favourite dish of the night and a highly recommended one at that, the prawn melt with a choice of breads was easily the best dish out of the four and was one of the most satisfying sandwiches found in Colombo.
The prawns are done just right and give a succulent touch to the melt while the cheese and green chilli take hints of a spicy Italian touch to the dish. The portion size isn’t very satisfactory but it’s totally worth ordering two portions of the melt.
In terms of beverages the chocolate milkshake was a clear favourite over the more typical vanilla shake which lacked any uniqueness but merely got the job done. A beverage to watch out for is the strawberry tea which comes through with a strong flavour and delicious aroma, a treat for a cold day with a book.
All in all the Mews remains a favourite location in Colombo for a quiet cup of tea or a low key dinner but be sure to watch out for the section of mains in the menu.
