After hearing about this chocolate lava cupcake from a friend, I was curious to find out which bakery in Colombo was behind such an invention. Stumbling upon Moreish on Facebook, I

was tempted to find out more. This Thursday on the Food Factor, we feature Moreish, a home-based bakery run by Melshika Weerasinghe. She has developed and introduced a very creative yet delicious variety of cupcakes, desserts, birthday cakes, flavoured and wedding cakes, cookies, tarts and even pasta and barbeque meals. Melshika tells me that ‘Moreish’ simply means “I want more” and she’s got a supportive team behind her success.

You could even say that it’s a family based bakery as Melshika credits her success to her husband, their son, her brother, sister-in-law and her parents. She had no plans of starting a bakery but it all started with the cupcakes she baked for her son’s birthday. “My friends loved them and they kept pushing me to start a home-based bakery. My very first order was for 230 cupcakes and I’ve been doing well so far,” she explained.

She sources her all her ingredients locally and believes in good, quality ingredients even if they come with a huge price tag. Apart from the chocolate lava cupcake, she does a wide range of cupcake flavours such as vanilla, chocolate, chocolate chip, chocolate fudge, triple chocolate, chocolate rum, peppermint, rose, orange, almond, strawberry, banana, pineapple and peach. 

The bakery also undertakes orders for novelty cupcakes, designed (2D and 3D) cupcakes, love and rice cake, French macaroons, desserts and tarts in addition to short eats such as burgers, hot dogs, pasta meals, BBQ chicken, cheese blasters and seafood delights. Moreish specialties include the love cake, dark chocolate almond brownies and the flavoured cakes.

Moreish was started in June 2011 and Melshika says the response from clients has been wonderful. Initially when she started Moreish, she had her hands full with another career but she slowly gave that up to focus on Moreish. She handles the baking and decorating on her own while a member from her team chooses ingredients necessary for the order.  

With Colombo’s vast spread of home-run bakeries specializing in cupcakes, the Food Factor asked Melshika what set Moreish apart from the rest in which she responded saying “Uniqueness is not merely measured only on what you create it’s also in how you handle the business. I believe in myself and my very valuable clients believe in me. I only believe that I should create the best for each and every client regardless of how big or small their order is. So, I would say my unique factor is creativity, neatness, an amazing taste in all what I bake & last not but least great respect for my clients."
