Let me start by describing just how good the teriyaki chicken rice burger at Kami Maki is. Two thick round rice patties and a mound of teriyaki chicken drizzled with wasabi mayonnaise and sitting in a pool of teriyaki sauce, and garnished with a couple of sliced pickled gherkins served on a square wooden board with a pair of chopsticks for your usage.

The first bite ensued nothing more than a burst of flavours in my mouth, and made me wonder just how wonderfully executed this dish was. I promised myself I would come back again to try the sushi, wasabi fries, homemade ice cream and more rice burgers.

Kami Maki, meaning ‘divine roll’ in Japanese, is just two weeks old and has been nothing short of a positive response from customers. The restaurant is serving authentic Japanese fare such as sashimi (available in salmon, tuna and white fish), nigiri (available in salmon, tuna, white fish, cuttlefish and shrimp), and sushi in a variety of fillings such as poached shrimp and avocado, cream cheese and cucumber, crab and cucumber with chillie mayo, smoked salmon and avocado, teriyaki chicken, avocado and bell pepper, and a tuna salad to name a few.

The extensive menu also features signature dishes such as miso soup, spicy ramen broth, tempura and teriyaki dishes, Karaage, donburi (Japanese rice bowl), salads and the rice burgers.

The range of desserts are rather creative and involve tempura fried chocolate cake, fruit and jalapeño jelly with ice cream and sugar, panko fried banana fritters with honey and wasabi powder, cookie coated chocolate ice cream, Nutella fries and homemade ice cream available in passion fruit, tamarind, vanilla, chocolate, green tea and strawberry.

The Food Factor learned that Kami Maki will be tying up with Senok Tea to create a tea bar, which will specialize in iced teas including green tea and flavoured green teas, which are of export quality. Fresh fruit juices are on the list of beverages too.

The restaurant is rather small, and can seat only a maximum of 27 people. Wooden tables are positioned in front of the restaurant but the outdoor dining option is best enjoyed in the evenings owing to the balmy weather during the day.

Kami Maki is located at No.143A, Jawatte Road, Colombo 05. It’s recommended that you make a reservation on 0112590626/0773496349 because we heard that it gets rather packed, especially during evenings.

Parking is available on the right side of the restaurant and can accommodate 6 vehicles. They will introduce delivery within Colombo city limits soon, and the restaurant only accepts takeaway orders until 7PM. It is open everyday from 11.30AM-11.30PM and they are on Facebook so do visit the page for daily updates and information.
