Green Cabin

One of those memorable “after school” moments with my mum was when she’d take my brothers and I to Green Cabin to have their freshly baked Beef Pie, Bacon and Egg Pastry as well those soft Cream Buns.

Walking into Green Cabin in Kolpetty now, it is almost as though time has stood still – from the cosy cement booths occupied with a love-struck-couple or a family giggling away, to the simple yet clean tables and the waiters dressed in a white shirt tucked into a light green sarong with a belt.

Yes, the place does make a difference and with Green Cabin that homely Sri Lankan garden style setting is one of those settings that really compliment their delicious Sri Lankan food.

And I feel that the fact that you can come here five or ten years from now, and you will still be served the same delicious food is what makes customers patronise Green Cabin without a second thought.

My favourite is their crispy milky hoppers with their hot katta sambol and that perfectly cooked Achchi’s Chicken. This has to be accompanied with a chilled fresh lime juice. However, if hoppers, string hoppers, gothamba rotti and Sri Lankan curries are not quite what you are in the mood for, they also serve Sri Lankan style pizza and pasta as well as burgers, and even rice and noodle dishes. So when it comes to variety, they’ve definitely got it. But I still feel it is their Sri Lankan food that trumps the rest.

And when it comes to pastries, I firmly believe that no one does Sri Lankan pastries as well as Green Cabin.  Nothing could be better than their freshly baked Prawn Pie, Stuffed Chillies, Pork and Pineapple Pie or Mushroom Pie with some chilled iced coffee on a balmy afternoon!

I believe the most iconic of their cakes is their Pineapple Gateaux. This Green Cabin staple has hardly changed in decades. I know of Sri Lankans living abroad who rush down to Green Cabin when they get here, just to have some of this or their Cream Bun.

It is a mix of ambience, food and childhood memories that brings Sri Lankans to Green Cabin time and time again.

Yes, love Sri Lankan food. I have been out of the island for nearly 31 years and hoping to come back to settle down. This November I will make it a point to visit you again.

The food might be appealing and tasty but these days most of the food are displayed are on different kind of plates not round any more. Try to lay the same food in modern day plates and see the difference. With tourists arrivals increase Sri Lanka should show something special that other Asian countries.
