Gerard Mendis Chocolatier, is the brain-child of Gerard Mendis, who ventures out on his own after a long term stint with the Hilton. The wood clad premises on Horton Place is a woody affair with tones of brown dominating the ambience and the symbolic leopard which is a highlight element of the logo lending itself to the beige staff uniforms.
The setting is a mix of concepts with the confectionaries and chocolates displayed out front but the dining area located at the back. Seating arrangements are all in tones of wood with a prominent lamp shade perched above each table. The table setting is reminiscent of a fine dining restaurant and the service is to match with speedy hands and polite smiles. The aura of the venue is a collected calm and contrasts to other cafés, delis and patisseries found in the city. The first thought in my mind was that it’s quite the romantic venue, if I were to be there on a dinner date.
The menu is a mix of worlds with the items ranging from shrimp cocktails to chicken burgers and a truly delectable mix it is indeed. The strength of the menu is in its variety and as I later found out, in its palatability.
Balinese Chicken Satay: The appetizer served warm with a mustard peanut sauce is like all meat items on the menu a succulent serving, done well in exactly the right way to leave the meat tender enough to savour it. The peanut sauce is a wonderful compliment to the Balinese Chicken Satay and combines to present one of the most delicious appetizers served in Colombo.
Chicken Burger:The chicken burger is served with a side serving of coleslaw and a choice of potatoes served as wedges or fries. As far as the burger goes, you get exactly what you ask for; a darn good burger.
There’s nothing to go starry eyed above except that the patty maintains the very succulent quality which I’m starting to suspect is part and parcel of all meat items at the chocolatier. The coleslaw is a nice addition and like my friend very reasonably answered me when I asked him what he thought about the wedges, the wedges taste like potato.
Chicken Wok Fried Rice: I regret not having ordered the double wok fried rice which apparently is served with a devilled side dish. The Wok Fried Rice had a very appetizing flavour which was thoroughly enjoyable and works just fine for lunch.
Chocolate Cheese Cake: True to its name, the chocolatier is commendably apt in serving the finest chocolate mixed dishes. The chocolate cheese cake is for anyone with a sweet tooth. The chocolate is not overdone nor is it overpowering but mixes so well with the cheese cake. The chocolate cheese cake is a must try!
Chocolate Danish: The not so commonly found Chocolate Danish is another great confectionary, filled to the brim with yummy chocolate goodness, I could rave for days about this but maybe I’m slightly biased considering I love pastries (specially Danish) in general but once again, a must try.
All in all Gerard Mendis Chocolatier is what I would recommend to anyone looking to spend a little time over their food and really enjoy the ambience as much as the food.
