Freshly baked bread with the finest fillings are always bound to make the best submarines. This pretty much sums up Crusty’s,  the newest addition to the number of new eateries in town.

Just a bite into their delicious submarines easily gives you the impression that the food is nothing short of fresh. I also appreciated the fact that they maintain a healthy balance without overusing oils and sauces.

Their subs come in four, eight and 12 inches and can be enjoyed in breads baked in their very own kitchen, like their Healthy Farmer’s Crusty, Multi Grain Wheat Crusty, Herb and Cheese Crusty, Bavarian Crusty, Crusty Honey Oats, Roasted Garlic Crusty or even a typically Sri Lankan style Tropical Country Crusty (Kurakkan bread).

They have a number of delicious fillings and sauces to go with these breads while you can pick the salad you’d like in your sandwich, like, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, olives, pickles or red onions. Crusty’s submarines come in four categories – Favourites, Traditional, Asian and Veggie while they also do salads, sides and wraps and the Reuben sandwich with a number of fillings as well.

I tried out the Shish-Chicken topped with BBQ sauce and served in Multi Grain bread – it was fresh from the first bite, while the crunchy veggies which included fresh cucumber, lettuce and pickles complemented the meat and bread to the fullest. They also do a really good Tandoori chicken with Multi Grain bread and their own South West sauce. I couldn’t make up my mind as to which was better!

Even though I am not a huge fan of vegetarian food, I quite enjoyed their Aloo Masala sub which came packed in Light Bavarian bread. The peppers, cucumber and pickles along with the potato and peas were enhanced with their fresh yellow mustard sauce. In one word, this sandwich was divine.

Their eight inch subs are easily more than enough for two people and can be a meal in itself but if you’d like to indulge further, I’d recommend their delicious desserts too; especially their home-made ice creams like their tea ice cream, which is made using fresh tea. It also has a hint of caramel and comes in a sundae with various toppings! Another must try is the Rocky Road which has bits of marshmallows, nuts and raisins topped with chocolate sauce.

Pasindu Peiris, CEO/Chairman, RPG Holdings Private (Ltd) is the man behind Crusty’s. The idea to open up such a place came from the time he spent studying in the UK. “I realised that when you eat there, you know what goes in your food,” but in Sri Lanka he realised that it was not the case. So he decided it was time to open up a restaurant with a healthy twist. “I also want to make sure that what you eat here now and try out again in six months remains the same – I do not want to compromise on quality.” He comes from the tea background and eventually would like to introduce various teas into his menu at Crusty’s.

The fresh breads, healthy fillings, open kitchen all add to the ambience that is Crusty’s while their subs don’t leave you feeling stuffed.

Crusty’s is situated at 536, Havelock Road, Colombo 06 and they are open right through the week from 10am to 9.30pm. Check them out on Facebook.
