Our fun loving foodie this week Amrita Hapuarachchi says “I like to be known as a good mother and a good friend."
She is the owner of Amani, a clothing outlet located at 64 Stratford Avenue, Colombo 6 and also an accomplished writer, having been the editor of two university publications in the United States and has written for magazines in Sri Lanka as well.
She favourite pastimes include cooking and entertaining friends. She is also the mother of a lively 5 year old who keeps her on her toes and wits.
What is your favourite food?
I love food.. but my favorite has to be a toss between a good pasta, grilled fish and steamed vegetables, hot buttered cuttlefish and tiramisu.
What would you serve if you were hosting tea for good friends?
Sandwiches, home made cupcakes/cake/brownies, some fish patties and a nice pot of coffee for me – I am not a tea person.
What food do you refuse to have in your fridge?
Red meat, just because I just don’t like the smell.
What is the healthiest food you serve at home?
We try and eat healthy all the time – so we have lots of vegetables – fresh and frozen.
Name one comfort food you can’t do without.
Chocolate!
Name two of your favourite restaurant here in Colombo. And tell us why you like them.
Dining Room at Cinnamon Lakeside – fresh food, great service and I love the sushi bar and the prawns. Il Ponte – their salads and pizzas are yummy as well as their pastas.
What is the one thing you can’t stand people doing at the dining table?
Eating with their mouths open. I really don’t need to know what’s inside their mouths, as long as they enjoy the meal.
What is the most unusual food you’ve eaten? What was the experience like?
Snake and crocodile. Snake tasted like bony fish (it was good though) and crocodile was a bit tougher but it tasted like pork.
