Cheers

Cheers, like its namesake is a well frequented pub in Colombo with a large following of regulars that are fans of the ambience and of course the delicious food.

The items on the menu are most if not all very popular foreign dishes and anyone dining there should make full use of the options available. Not to mention the generous portion sizes, the food is also very preserving of its root dish unlike most Sri Lankan restaurants that adjust international dishes to suit local taste buds. For instance, like my friend mentioned, anyone with no love for salmon will hate the smoked salmon dish she ordered.

Fish and Chips (Rs.750) No trip to Cheers is complete without Fish and Chips and if I were to have the liberty of naming what I fancy as the signature dish, I would say Cheers did one darn good job with its Fish and Chips, almost to the point of it being the signature dish there.

The tartar sauce is simply divine and does bucket loads of good for the entire dish while the fish too is amazingly done. Anyone with a taste for good fish should definitely try this one out.

Chicken A La King (Rs.825) My friend’s poor wannabe knowledge of French loosely translated the meaning of Chicken A La King as being Chicken fit for a king, long story short, the dish isn’t even French. A dish with diced chicken served with a cream sauce and pasta or in this case rice.

Anyone partial to a creamy sauce with diced chicken dipped in it will be delighted with the Chicken A La King which is possibly one of the most creamy dishes I’ve tasted in recent times, beating many cream sauce pastas on its way to being crowned on the top of creamy dishes. The rice was unremarkable, mostly as it should be and gives all the prominence to the cream sauce which was delightful.

Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese (Rs.660) I was curious more than anything else with this dish, cream cheese with salmon is a curious combination even though the to go hand in hand in many canapés and are almost inseparable in most dishes. In my humblest of opinions cheese is not exactly the most palatable with fish or anything with a strong taste of its own. Smoked Salmon has a taste that is unique to it and is easily distinguishable in any dish.

To mix cream cheese with Salmon somehow seemed a waste of both ingredients. As far as I’m concerned my prediction came true. The mix of Salmon and the cream cheese was an ill fated one. However this again is my personal opinion and even I’m moved to admit that both were extremely tasty and traditionally Smoked Salmon is almost always served with cream cheese.

Cheers in conclusion might be ideal for a night out or just for dinner before one although the prices come with the added zest of it being located in a five star hotel, making Cheers likely to not be the most affordable diner in town. Although the prices can be reasoned with, the cool 25% tax and service charge make things a little over the budget. However for anyone in the mood to spoil themselves just a little bit, please do make your way to the Cinnamon Grand. Cheers!
