Tucked away in a quiet corner of Hotel Road, Mount Lavinia is a new café and art centre by the name of Charcoal Gallery Café.  Run by Priscilla Anandappa, artist and art teacher, she says that it has been a lifelong dream of hers to open an art gallery and centre. The café sits alongside the main gallery while the centre is located upstairs on the terrace.

The menu is simple and tasteful, including comforting favourites such as freshly made moist butter cake, gourmet chocolate brownies (baked by Priscilla), and Scottish shortbread, chocolate chip cookies and cheesecake made using Philadelphia cream cheese.

Dessert waffles are on the menu too, should you crave a delicious one with ice cream and fresh strawberries or with bananas or a choice of strawberry or chocolate sauce. Burgers, sandwiches and paninis are made upon order and the selection is small but just right.

The Food Factor learnt that the beef burger is a winner among regular customers in addition to the three cheese panini, mushroom panini and tuna salad sandwich.

Charcoal also serves a vegetarian quiche, which is another popular item on the menu. If you love your cake, you would definitely love Charcoal’s butter cake and chocolate mint cake.

Serving a variety of coffees, Charcoal does a mean cappuccino in addition to single and double shot espressos, café lattes, hot chocolate, Americano, macchiato, con panna, Babyccino, hot chocolate and iced coffee.

They also serve a variety of freshly brewed flavoured iced teas and kadey tea. Fresh juices and virgin mojitos are the ideal thirst quenchers while kids at the café can enjoy Ribena or a ‘Spyder’, a Coke and vanilla ice cream float.

The café has started serving breakfast items this week so if you are in the vicinity, do pop in for a comforting and tasty meal.

A striking feature of Charcoal is their reasonable prices for food and beverages, the most expensive item being the country cheesecake priced at Rs.400. Beverages are priced between 150-250 while food and dessert items are priced between 100-400.

“We want to serve our customers good, fresh and authentic fare but at the same time, we want everyone to be able to afford it,” explained Priscilla who co-owns the place with her husband and mother. Evenings at the café are quiet and romantic with jazz and old classics playing.

An upcoming event at the café will feature a photography exhibition, interactive art, a live band including an open mic session. Titled Common Thread Art Exhibition, the event will be held on June 29 from 6PM-12AM. Entrance is free.

The Charcoal Gallery Café is open from 10AM-8PM from Tuesday to Saturday, while they are open from 4PM-8PM on Monday. They are located at No.75, Hotel Road, Mount Lavinia.
