When it comes to reasonably priced seafood, served in a pleasant and clean environment Barracuda down Wasala Raod on Marine Drive, in Dehiwala, is just the place.
They have a wide variety of East Asian influenced dishes on their menu, while their waiters are extremely courteous. A bonus is that the restaurant is squeaky clean.
The atmosphere is definitely cosy even though it is situated on the beach as the tables are nestled in between Pandanus Palms making your dining experience a very private one but if you’d like to have a few friends over it is also the ideal location.
They allow you to take your own alcohol without corkage, which is always a plus. They serve up some delicious mocktails of which my favourite was the ‘Sundown’ – a mix of carrot, lime and cucumber.
Barracuda, which opened its doors around six months ago, has a large menu ranging from Appetizers to Soups and Omelettes as well as Rice, Noodles, Chicken, Beef, Seafood and Lamb dishes. But, sadly for me, I found out that they do not serve pork!
I felt their best dish was their Singapore Style Chilli Crab. My partner and I dug into most of it and there was still enough remaining for another meal! In general, their large portions are enough for at least four people while their small portions would be more than enough for two people, therefore certainly giving you value for your money.
Among the other dishes I enjoyed was their Continental Style Beef as well as their extremely flavourful Indonesian Chicken. The latter had just the right amount of coconut-cream, and spices while the former had really subtle flavours and was extremely soft and fresh.
In terms of vegetarian options, their Bok Choy with Black Mushroom was delightful. The vegetables were so fresh and cooked just right and still had that perfect crunch to it. I would also absolutely recommend Barracuda’s Seafood Pineapple Rice.
In terms of desserts, I tried out their Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream. It looked pretty good but was unfortunately a little too dry for my liking.
All in all though, their main courses are what you need to try out so the disappointing Brownie didn’t really affect my opinion of the place. With the Indian Ocean as your view, what more can you ask for, in bustling Colombo, after all.
