Rooted in Nature, a culinary and sustainability initiative by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, has been relaunched at Shangri-La Colombo. This initiative focuses on locally and ethically sourced ingredients, environmentally friendly menu choices, and support for local producers. At Capital Bar & Grill’s Sunday Jazz Brunch, guests can experience a vibrant menu that exemplifies the Rooted in Nature concept. From locally harvested oysters to fresh herbs from their urban garden, healthy greens from local businesses, and high-quality local spices, the brunch showcases a commitment to sourcing the freshest local produce. Diners can easily identify Rooted in Nature menu items by spotting the pea shoot logo. These sustainability efforts aim to strengthen relationships with local communities, support sustainable farming and fishing practices, and deliver higher-quality cuisine to guests.
Appetisers
The Sunday Jazz Brunch at Capital Bar & Grill started on a high note with a selection of appetizers that were both visually stunning and delicious. Each dish was expertly executed, ensuring a harmonious blend of flavours. Diners are presented with a choice of appetisers including Yellowfin Tuna Carpaccio with citrus vinaigrette and baby rocket, Caprese salad with marinated bocconcini and heirloom tomato with garden fresh pesto, Chicken Liver Parfait with butter brioche, caramelized onion jam and fig compote, Eggplant gratin with tomato confit and parmesan cheese, Beef Bitterballen with Dijon mustard dip, Avocado bruschetta on sourdough bread with shrimp, Arugula salad with candied walnuts, watermelon and feta cheese and Truffled Cauliflower and Potato Soup with rustic crouton and scallions from which you can pick four.
The Yellowfin Tuna Carpaccio comprised delicate slices of yellowfin tuna paired with a zesty citrus vinaigrette and topped with a bed of baby rocket. The freshness of the tuna was complemented by the vibrant flavours of the vinaigrette, creating a tantalizing starter. Although not many would opt for a chicken liver based appetizer, the Chicken Liver Parfait, which was served with butter brioche, caramelized onion jam, and a fig compote had a delightful balance of flavours owing to the combination of savoury and sweet elements. I also loved the Dutch-style meatballs - Beef Bitterballen - made with flavorful beef and served with a tangy Dijon mustard dip. The crispy exterior gave way to a succulent and savoury filling, making them a true crowd-pleaser. The creamy Truffled Cauliflower and Potato Soup will warm your palate. Topped with rustic croutons and scallions, this comforting soup was another favourite.
No seafood lover should miss the freshly shucked oysters at the Sunday Jazz Brunch. The oysters are a true delicacy, offering a briny and refreshing flavour. They’re also unlimited, and they will serve you as many oysters as your heart desires.
Mains Course
The main course options at Capital Bar & Grill’s Sunday Jazz Brunch offer a variety of culinary delights. Whether you prefer meat, seafood, or vegetarian options, there was something to suit every taste. Diners can pick one from a list of 5 diverse items on the menu that includes Mushroom Tortellini with cheese sauce, Honey-Glazed Chicken Skewer with garlic rice and baby leeks, Baked Potato Espuma with hand-cut lamb ragout and crispy potato skin, Seafood Risotto with baby spinach and Poached Egg in spicy tomato sauce with toasted brioche. The Honey-Glazed Chicken Skewer that I opted for proved to be a good choice. Succulent chicken skewers were bathed in a delightful honey glaze and served with fragrant garlic rice and tender baby leeks. The combination of sweet and savoury flavours made this dish delicious.
Don’t miss out on the Carving Trolley at the Sunday Jazz Brunch which offers a choice between Pork Tenderloin or Poultry Wellington. I tried the Poultry Wellington, which was a satisfying dish. The tender poultry was encased in a flaky pastry crust and served with accompanying elements such as onion confit, braised apple, roasted potato, and a flavorful mushroom cream sauce. Although it wasn’t as good as it could have been, the Poultry Wellington at Capital Bar & Grill was still a tasty and enjoyable option for brunch-goers particularly because of the delicious accompaniments.
Dessert
No brunch is complete without a selection of heavenly desserts, and Capital Bar & Grill does not disappoint. The Grandma’s Dessert Trolley presents an array of sweet temptations that will satisfy even the most discerning sweet tooth. The dessert trolley also offers unlimited servings and includes beloved desserts like Mango Cheesecake, Chocolate Trifle Jar, Caramelized Vanilla Crème Brûlée, Apple Tarte Tatin and fresh fruits. Even for those who are not typically dessert enthusiasts, the desserts at Capital Bar & Grill’s Sunday Jazz Brunch are sure to captivate and delight, as I personally found myself thoroughly enjoying them.
