Talk, Tea & Book Launch - Wednesday January 16th

The four speakers, Juliet (best-selling author), Shiromal (Chairman and Managing Director of Jetwing Hotels and Travel), Herman (best-selling author and tea plantation owner)and Monica (hugely successful Art Director) will talk about their very real experiences regarding the mysteries and great challenges of putting a book together from story conception to getting it out to the multitudes, including how to write, design a book, choose a title, publish, distribute and promote - none of which is a walk in the park but if you have passion you can overcome anything, though you might need a little help from your friends or a witch doctor, but beware the latter comes at a price and if you change your mind too late, you will also need an exorcist.
Juliet Coombe, a highly versatile writer who worked on the first Galle Literary Festival and has moved into writing adventurous children’s books since. She will be launching a wonderful second book in the series on January 16th Donald Trunk, Sri Lanka’s Swimming Elephant’, ominously entitled, ‘Donald Trunk & The Curse of Crabzilla’.
Books that combine the life of a very mischievous elephant using experts on wildlife for the entire storyline, which she combines in fascinating ways with the islands amazing history. She is a storyteller with a wicked sense of humour and a wish to inspire readers to see the world from different angles by stepping into the shoes of others. Her travels, as a writer passionate about the world, took her to Sri Lanka for two decades, where she lived out a Grimm’s fairytale existence in the ancient Fort City of Galle, a mysterious place full of contradictions and curses, one of which catapulted her back to her childhood homeland in the UK, where she has had to start again, with her two Sri Lankan-British sons. Behind the colourful adventures, there are many important messages and lessons for us all to learn-lessons Juliet learnt the hard way in her quest for honor and fair play for everyone.
The event includes talks, tea, book launch and fabulous prizes on Wednesday January 16th at the Jetwing Lighthouse Eddystone Hall from 3 to 5pm.
During the talks, children can get involved in the following exciting activities;
Children's Activities
1. Children will be shown, by the talented Jetwing chefs, how to carve different animals into fruits and vegetables which they can take home with them. They will make pumpkins into elephants, apples into butterflies and carrots into crabs to name just a few!
2. Children will make art pieces and boats for Donald to set sail in from recycled plastic bottles found on the beaches around Galle.
3. Janaka de Silva, a very talented artist, will have the children painting on various objects including rocks and pots with special paints and what they create they can take home with them.
4. Staff members will be dressed as characters from the books from butterflies to elephants so the children can get their pictures taken with them! They can even get their selfies taken with Donald himself.
5. Make sure your children bring along their own elephant art piece whether it be a drawing, painting, sculpture and the winner gets an unforgettable safari trip to Noel Rodrigo’s Leopard Safaris in Yala or Wilpattu National Parks where they will get to see real elephants in the wild as well as the famous leopard.
6. Tea and snacks available for the children including a wonderful cake with the whole map of Donald’s adventures displayed in the icing – it will be a spectacular event!
